NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- TCU defensive end Jerry Hughes has been named a first-team preseason All-American by Athlon Sports.
Hughes was a consensus All-America last season when he led the nation with 15 sacks and six forced fumbles. He also ranked in the top 10 in tackles for loss (19.5) and fumble recoveries (three). Hughes added two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown. He was one of five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, honoring the nation's top defensive player.
Athlon tabbed Hughes, cornerbacks Rafael Priest and Nick Sanders, offensive tackle Marshall Newhouse and punter Anson Kelton as first-team preseason All-Mountain West Conference selections.
Representing the Horned Frogs on the second-team squad are offensive tackle Marcus Cannon, tailback Joseph Turner, wide receiver Jimmy Young, placekicker Ross Evans and punt returner Jeremy Kerley.
TCU was ranked as having the MWC's top secondary while being second-best at defensive line and the quarterback position.
