BALTIMORE -- TCU placekicker Ross Evans has been named a preseason honorable-mention All-American by NationalChamps.net.
NationalChamps.net previously announced Horned Frog defensive end Jerry Hughes as a first-team selection and offensive tackle Marshall Newhouse as an honorable-mention pick.
Evans was the only freshman in the nation last season to be a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award, honoring the nation's top placekicker. He was 16-of-20 on field goals. The 16 field goals tied for the fifth-most in a season at TCU. Evans' 49 PATs were one shy of tying Chris Kaylakie's 2000 single-season TCU record.
A native of Burnet, Texas, Evans made a 50-yard field goal in the season opener at New Mexico on his first collegiate attempt. It was the sixth-longest made kick by a freshman in 2008 while tying for the 12th-longest field goal in TCU history.
Evans had a streak of 12 consecutive made attempts at one point in the season.
