BALTIMORE -- NationalChamps.net has named TCU defensive end Jerry Hughes a first-team preseason All-American with offensive tackle Marshall Newhouse an honorable-mention selection.
Hughes was a consensus All-American in 2008 after leading the nation in sacks (15) and forced fumbles (six). The senior from Sugar Land, Texas, was a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and Ted Hendricks Award.
Hughes keyed a TCU defense last year which topped the nation in total defense and run defense while placing second in scoring defense and fourth in pass defense efficiency.
At left tackle, Newhouse has started every game the last two seasons. The Dallas native was a second-team All-Mountain West Conference pick in 2008 after being an honorable-mention choice as a sophomore.
Newhouse anchored a Horned Frog offensive line that enabled TCU to lead the nation in 2008 in time of possession (35:10) while setting single-season school records for points scored (437) and touchdowns (56). The Horned Frogs were 12th nationally in team rushing and 24th in total offense.
