FORT WORTH, Texas--TCU Athletics has selected the women's 4x400 relay team and slugger Matt Vern as its Student-Athletes of the Week for their dominating performances last week.
The TCU women's 4x400 blazed to first-place honors on Saturday with the second-fastest time in the NCAA and the world at the Iowa State NCAA Qualifier. By recording an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 3:34.63, the women's 4x400 qualified for the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championships, which will take place this week in College Station. Overall, the unit consisting of Hayley Shade, Kishelle Paul, Jessica Clarke and Jessica Young set a new school record and just missed an NCAA automatic mark. The previous school record of 3:34.75 was set by Jamee Jones, Paul, Deborah Jones and Nathandra John in Fayetteville, Ark., in 2007.
Matt Vern was consistently solid as he hit .556 and homered in all three games of the Wichita State series. Scoring six runs and collecting 8 RBIs Vern contributed greatly to the Frogs first sweep of an opponent this season. His eighth inning 3-run home run on Friday against WSU tied the game at five and the Frogs went on to win. His 2-run homer on Saturday gave the Frogs a lead they would never relinquish. Vern's final homer of the weekend, a 3-run shot on Sunday, put the Frogs up 5-1 in the first inning.
