DALLAS—TCU men's tennis assistant coach Jason Marshall and American teammate Patrick Briaud fell just short of completing a surprising championship run Saturday in the main draw doubles final at the Men's Challenger of Dallas, a USTA Pro Circuit event held last week at Dallas' T Bar M Racquet Club.
Marshall and Briaud, who reached the final by surviving a pair of tiebreakers while posting victories earlier in the tournament, came out on the other end of a tiebreaker decision Saturday. Prakash Amritraj (India) and Rajeev Ram (United States), the tournament's No. 1 seed, took a 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 win to earn the Dallas Challenger title.
Marshall and Briaud led the tiebreaker set at 8-7 and took the serve with the opportunity to seal the match, but Amritraj hit back-to-back well-placed shots and Ram followed by forcing an error that closed out the victory.
"We fought hard, but Prakash - his forehand on those scrapped out points at the end of the breaker were perfectly placed," Marshall said. "There wasn't anything we could do with those world-class shots."
Despite the loss, Marshall and Briaud closed out a whirlwind tournament that featured a partisan crowd in their favor during the final. The two players are each homestate products and members of the T Bar M club. Marshall hails from the Dallas area, while Briaud is a product of College Station, Texas.
