FORT WORTH, Texas--TCU Athletics selected jumper Neidra Covington and tennis player Emanuel Brighiu as its Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.
Neidra Covington set a new Gilliam Indoor Track and Field Stadium record last Saturday to win the women's triple jump on the final day of competition at the Texas A&M Invitational. Covington captured the event title by soaring 42 feet, 8 3/4 inches. Covington's season-best jump is currently an NCAA provisional mark and the 12th-best leap in the NCAA in 2009. Covington jumped farther than the nation's No. 9, No. 13, No. 21 and No. 24 ranked jumpers in the NCAA in College Station. Covington's record-setting jump is currently the 12th-best leap in the NCAA in 2009 according to TrackShark.com, also ranking second in the MWC this winter. In the women's long jump, Covington soared to a fifth-place finish with a season-best leap of 19 feet, 10 ¼ inches. Her jump currently ranks as the third-best leap in the MWC this winter.
Emanuel Brighiu posted wins in both singles and doubles during TCU's 5-2 loss to No. 72 Oklahoma on Saturday. His 6-4, 6-4 victory at the No. 1 singles position over 76th-ranked Sergey Avdeyev marked his second this spring over a ranked opponent. He also teamed with Frog junior Adrian Simon to defeat the Sooner tandem of Sergey Avdeyev/Ionut Beleleu (8-4) at No. 2 doubles.
