NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- TCU defensive end Jerry Hughes has been named a first-team All-American by the Walter Camp Football Foundation and CBSSports.com.
Walter Camp is the oldest All-America team in the nation, having first selected a team in 1889. Voting for the Walter Camp All-America team is done by media relations directors and coaches in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).
It's the second straight year Hughes has been named a first-team Walter Camp All-American. He joins Texas quarterback Colt McCoy, Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes, Tennessee safety Eric Berry and USC safety Taylor Mays as repeat first-team selections.
Hughes is the 2009 recipient of the Ted Hendricks Award, honoring the nation's top defensive end. He was also a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and Rotary Lombardi Award. He remains in contention for the Lott Trophy and Lowe's Senior CLASS Award.
A senior from Sugar Land, Texas, Hughes anchors the nation's top-ranked defense. He has 15 tackles for loss, including 11 1/2 sacks, among a career-high 54 stops. The Horned Frogs are 12-0 and headed to the Fiesta Bowl for their first BCS appearance.
Hughes is on pace to graduate this spring, in four years, with a degree in communications. In October, he received a Local Hero Award from Bank of America for his work in the community.
Hughes was named last week to the American Football Coaches Association All-America team.
