TCU junior distance runner Dani Selner once again sat down with GoFrogs.com this week and gave fans an inside look into the fall cross country season. This is the second installment of Selner's weekly journal.
Selner's Second Journal
Two weeks down, two to go. Two more weeks until the Cowboy Jamboree in Oklahoma and we couldn't be more eager to compete. Although we didn't have a meet this week we had another hard week of training. Last week we added hills in addition to our regular tempos. One of the reasons is that we will become better at running hills. This might sound pretty obvious, but many runners overlook this important part in training. The muscle groups used to get over the hills are the same groups used in sprinting, so by running the hills you are enhancing your speed by building strength. In addition, by strengthening your leg muscles, hill training helps to reduce injuries. Doing this for the next few weeks will help us to prepare for the tricky course at the Cowboy Jamboree. The course there is pretty challenging with the very beginning starting on a 300 meter hill incline. The rest of the course is fashioned in a similar way with many hills that would challenge any runner. Anyways, if you're up at 6:15AM on Thursday mornings you'll probably see us running up and down Berry Street. It's okay, we don't mind if you honk.
Besides training, the team is running smoothly. The freshmen are really stepping it up and we should see some big results from both Kelly Dawson and Allie Wyatt at the next meet. Additionally, other girls like Ashley Millerick and Lisa Baity have made additional efforts to create a promising top seven set of runners. Needless to say, it's a great time to be a Horned Frog.
Until next week that's all. Keep those frog legs running!
