Fort Worth, Texas - The TCU cross country program began its preparations for the 2008 season on Tuesday with an early morning workout at Trinity Park in Fort Worth.
TCU returns both Festus Kigen and Tanja Ivandic from last year's squad and will look to add several talented newcomers to an already young squad in 2008.
Below are comments from second-year distance coach Shawn Winget on the first day of preseason.
How did they look this morning overall?
"Festus looked outstanding this morning, while many of the returning guys have really improved. A couple of the freshman surprised me, but we are a lot better off then we were last year at this point. On the girls side, Tanja Ivandic and Ashley Millerick looked really good."
What is the biggest difference between last year and this year?
"I think there is more of a positive thinking this year on their part. Now they are coming in with the mindset of if I am going to do this then I am going to do it right, plus it helps that they all have done a little running over the summer."
What do you expect the rest of the week out of the student-athletes?
"We are just trying to get a feel for all the new kids. We are going to do a hard workout again on Thursday morning, so hopefully they start to get a feel for me as well. Really, the next six weeks are all about building."
How do you think the preparation will go for the first two meets?
"We are treating these first two meets as another hard practice session. We will have three weeks until Oklahoma State and that is where we really want to start running faster."
