FORT WORTH, Texas - Three TCU baseball players were named as part of the 64-man Brooks Wallace Award Watch List Friday morning. Ben Carruthers, Bryan Holaday and Tyler Lockwood have all been recognized as candidates for the award that goes to the nation's top collegiate baseball player.
Carruthers put together a career-year in his junior campaign. He played in all 63 contests, hit .308 and posted career highs in hits (82), doubles (12), triples (4), RBI (33) and stolen bases (15). The impressive season and his defensive prowess earned him a nod as first-team all-Mountain West.
Holaday stepped right into the lineup in his first season at TCU and ran all the way to a first-team all-conference nod. The junior hit .311 in his sophomore campaign with 68 hits and 41 runs batted in. He led the league with 21 batters caught stealing and ranked 54th nationally in toughest to strikeout with just 15 in 219 at-bats.
Lockwood was light's out on the mound for the Frogs in 2008. His first six appearances of the season came out of the bullpen where he posted a 0.81 ERA. The start of conference season marked Lockwood's transition to the starting rotation where he excelled as well. The right-hander finished the season with a 7-2 record to go along with a 2.75 ERA. He fanned 71 batters in 104 2/3 innings pitched. The end of the season result was a spot on the first-team all-conference list.
In all the Mountain West has seven representatives on the list. TCU leads the way with three, while New Mexico boasts two candidates followed by one each from BYU and San Diego State.
