FORT WORTH, Texas - GoFrogs.com recently sat down with freshman sprinter Mark Barnes to get his thoughts on the upcoming 2009 indoor season.
Barnes was one of the top prep track and field athletes in the state of Texas in 2008. The freshman from Houston finished third in the 100 and second in the 200 at the 2008 state meet.
TCU will open the indoor track and field season on Jan. 17 at the Texas Tech Invitational.
How have preseason workouts gone?
"Preseason started off rough, but as the season went on I got more in shape and the workouts went smooth."
What made you come to TCU?
"I came to TCU because of its history in track and field as well as its strong academic programs. Also, Coach Anderson has a solid history of coaching, which helped me decide on TCU."
Has anyone helped you find your way on the track?
"I would say that both Coach Anderson and Coach Williams have helped me out a lot. My teammate Mychal Dungey has as well."
What are your goals for this season?
"I plan on placing in the top 3 in the 60 and 200 meters at the MWC Championships. I would also like to make it to nationals if possible. As for outdoors, I plan on being in the top 3 in the 100 and 200 meters at conference, while also making it to nationals. If I am on the 4x100 relay then hopefully I can help the team make it to the NCAA Championships and place in the top 3."
"My main goal is to help TCU win a conference title during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. I would also like to keep my grades up and stay healthy throughout the year."
What do you expect out of the team this season?
"I expect both the men and women to do well. I also expect for the Flyin' Frogs to turn some heads this season."
Do you have a favorite class that you have taken so far?
"I wouldn't say it is my favorite class, but I enjoy my english class. I learn so much in that class."
Did the Olympics get you excited to get started at TCU, especially seeing so many former Flyin' Frogs?
"I was proud of my school for having so many former Flyin' Frogs in the Olympics especially in the events that I run. Hopefully, my teammates and I will be in the next Olympics in 2012."
