FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU swimming and diving team departed for San Diego on Jan. 3 for a 10-day trip, which included dual meets against San Diego State, BYU and Utah.
On Jan. 4, the women's team competed against San Diego State at the Aztec Aquaplex, which is a new outdoor pool. In the meantime, the men's team conducted dry-land training around the hilly terrain of San Diego. The following day, both teams practiced at San Diego State, as both coaching staffs trained different groups of swimmers.
The Frogs traveled 120 miles north on Jan. 6 to Los Angeles, Calif., and visited Hollywood Boulevard and The Grove, which is a well-known outdoor shopping area. Later that night, the team flew to Salt Lake City, Utah, and arrived at their Park City Condos at 2 a.m.
For the next three days, the team trained at the Park City pool in preparation for the upcoming meet at BYU, where the elevation was over 6500 feet. The Frogs were able to shop on Main Street in Park City, which is where the annual Sundance Movie Festival is held. On Jan. 8, a storm rolled through, dropping a foot of snow.
On Jan. 10, both squads competed against the Cougars of BYU, which saw impressive individual showings on both sides. The following day, the team practiced at the University of Utah, with one training session similar to the one at San Diego State.
The Horned Frogs met the Utes in a MWC dual meet on Jan. 12, as the men came away with a 136-101 victory, and both teams set several season-best times in the process. After the meet, the team enjoyed their last day in Utah at the Gateway Mall.
"I felt really good about the entire trip with the competition and the overall experience the team had," said TCU?head coach Richard Sybesma. "The altitude training was great and will really help us at the Mountain West Conference meet in February."
