Jessica Young, an All-American sprinter at the University of Richmond, recently sat down with GoFrogs.com to talk about her transition from Richmond to TCU.
Young will be a junior this winter and have two years of eligibility left. She has run an indoor time of 7.31 seconds in the 60 meters, while also posting an outdoor time of 52.49 in the 400 meters.
GoFrogs.com: Tell me a little bit about your background and why you chose to transfer to TCU this season?
Jessica Young: I ran for the University of Richmond for two years. After the coach who recruited me left, I was going to stick it out, but I just really felt that I would not grow to my potential. I just really outgrew the program at Richmond and had to move on. I chose to transfer to TCU because of coach Anderson, who I believe can get me to where I want to be athletically. I also loved the campus and the broadcast journalism program here.
GF: What has being at TCU been like so far?
JY: Being at TCU has been a pleasure. I'm enjoying myself on and off the track and love the coaches, the students, the professors and my teammates.
GF: How has practice been going?
JY: Practice so far has been challenging for me physically. I am not used to practicing in the humidity or with girls that challenge me physically on the track. I appreciate it though and it's one of the reasons I left Richmond, to have great training partners.
GF: What does it mean for you to be part of such a great program?
JY: I am so happy beyond measure to be part of a great program like TCU. A lot of people say that any school would be lucky to have me run for them, but I am grateful for coach Anderson having me here and I appreciate him a lot.
GF: What do you know about the history of sprinting at TCU?
JY: I am aware of a lot of great athletes that came out of TCU. I'm definitely aware of what coach Anderson has done in the past with his teams. That's another reason why I came to TCU.
GF: What are your goals for this season?
JY: I have very high goals for this upcoming season. I'll just say now that people should expect big time improvements in my 60, 200 and 400 meter races.
GF: Who on the team has impressed you the most and why?
JY: I would say Virgil Hodge has impressed me the most. I think that would be the obvious seeing as how she has made it so far this season and has done extremely well, making it to the world championships, which is one of my goals as well.
GF: Which meet are you most looking forward to this season?
JY: I'm definitely without a question looking forward to the 2008 Olympic Trials.
