Frogs fourth after strong second round in Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. - After a second-round 5-under 283, the TCU men's golf team owns fourth place through 36 of 54 holes at the highly competitive National Invitational Tournament. Monday was a strong showing for the Horned Frogs, who will return to the OMNI Tucson National Golf Club, the site of the Mountain West Conference Championships, later this month.
No. 24 Tulsa is the clubhouse leader at 564 (-12). Against MWC competition, TCU is three shots ahead of sixth-ranked UNLV and five in the clear of New Mexico. In the morning round, the Frogs shot an even-par 288 to rank tied for 10th among the 15 teams. Nine of the schools, including 30th-ranked TCU, are listed among the nation's top 30 according to the Golfstat ratings system.
Robby Ormand, a sophomore from Austin, leads the way, as he is tied for fourth place individually. He fired a bogey-free, 4-under 68 in the afternoon round. His season-best finish is a share of 37th place. His 68 was just one stroke off matching a career best. Ormand's 36-hole sum of 140 (-4) is just four shots behind the card of Tulsa's Ryan Henry (136).
Senior Drew Stoltz is eyeing his fourth top-10 finish in seven tournaments this year. He is currently tied for 10th place a 142 (-2). He shot 1-under 71s in both the morning and afternoon sessions.
Meanwhile, true freshman Travis Woolf is bidding for his third top-20 landing in just his fourth collegiate event. He is tied for the 24th position with a two-round 145 (+1).
Junior Franklin Corpening is tied for 42nd among the 78 competitors at 147 (+3). He is one shot and seven spots ahead of sophomore teammate Jesse Speirs (148, +4).
TCU's best finishes this year include a pair of runner-up placements. The Frogs were second at the season-opening Intercollegiate and also finished second at the Memphis Intercollegiate in the fall. Their top showing in the spring was a fifth-place finish at last week's Morris Williams Intercollegiate in Austin.
