FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU men's golf team is tied for eighth place after the first day of play at the USC Collegiate Invitational in Westlake Village, Calif. The Horned Frogs opened with a 297 (+13) in the morning round, then used a 9-over 293 in the second round to move up from 13th place.
With a 36-hole score of 590, the Frogs are just five strokes out of fifth place. Host school and fifth-ranked Southern California leads the 15-team field with an even-par 568. The tournament is being played at the North Ranch C.C. (par 71, 6,900 yards).
Sophomore Jesse Speirs fired a 2-under 69 to open the tournament and is TCU's top performer thus far. With a two-round 145 (+3), he has a share of 17th place among the 84 participants.
Just one stroke out of the top 20 is fellow sophomore Jon McLean (T-25th, 146). He bounced back from an opening-round 76 to score a 69 in the afternoon. Franklin Corpening, a junior, has a share of 34th position at 147. He shot a 75 in the first round and a 1-over 72 on the second 18.
After a pair of 76s, senior Drew Stoltz is tied for 55th at 152 (+10). Robby Ormand, who is playing as an individual and does not count toward TCU's team score, is also at 152.
Freshman Travis Woolf, who opened the day with an 80, was disqualified in the second round after signing an incorrect scorecard. His second-round score would have counted toward the team total.
The tournament's final round will begin Tuesday at 7:15 a.m. (PT). The Horned Frogs will tee off at 8:30. Live scoring of the tournament will be available on www.GoFrogs.com.
