COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- TCU freshman Valentine Derrey has been selected the Mountain West Conference Women's Golfer of the Month for February. It is the second time this season a Horned Frog has received the MWC monthly award. Catherine Matranga was the September recipient after capturing the individual title at the Dick McGuire Invitational.
Derrey became the first TCU freshman since 1997 (Angela Stanford) to win a tournament when she shared in medalist honors at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. Derrey was playing in just her second collegiate event.
A native of Paris, France, Derrey shot a 1-over-par 217. The field featured 10 of the top-50 players in the nation. Derrey finished two strokes ahead of Georgia's Taylor Leon, who entered the tournament as the nation's top-ranked player.
Derrey's first-round 5-under-par 67, which included a 32 on the back nine, tied a TCU record originally set by former All-American Brooke Tull in 2004.
