
Ortiz named MWC Defensive Player of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- TCU defensive end Chase Ortiz has been named the Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in Saturday's 34-10 victory over UNLV.
Ortiz, a candidate for MWC Defensive Player of the Year, had three tackles for a loss, including two sacks, among seven total stops. He also forced two fumbles while recovering one.
A senior from League City, Texas, Ortiz was instrumental in TCU limiting UNLV to 12 yards rushing on 22 attempts.
Ortiz's two sacks gave him 19.5 in his career, moving him ahead of Roosevelt Collins (18.0, 1988-91) into fifth place on TCU's all-time list.
Ortiz is second in the MWC?in tackles for a loss (14.5). Air Force's John Rabold, who has played one more game (12), has 16.5. Ortiz's 8.0 sacks are tied for second in the league, trailing only BYU's Jan Jorgensen (8.5).
Ortiz has been a first-team All-MWC selection the last two seasons. He topped the MWC in tackles for a loss (14.0) and sacks (9.0) in 2005.
