
TCU announces December award winners

FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU athletic department announced its monthly student-athlete awards for the month of December on Wednesday.
On the men's side, fellow men's basketball players Alvardo Parker and Neil P. Dougherty were the recipients of the Male Athlete and Scholar-Athlete of the Month awards, respectively.
For the women, Ashley Davis, a senior guard for the Lady Frogs basketball team, earned the Female Athlete of the Month award while swimmer Cheryl Townsend was named the Female Scholar-Athlete of the Month.
Junior forward Alvardo Parker was named the Male Athlete of the Month after helping lead the men's basketball team to a 4-2 record in December. In six games, Parker averaged a team-best 10.3 points per contest, and also led the team in rebounds (7.3) and blocked shots (2.8). Parker also shot 60.9 percent from the floor (28-for-46) over the six-game stretch. Parker is currently ranked first in the Mountain West Conference and 20th nationally in blocked shots per game, and also ranks 15th in the MWC in rebounds.
Neil P. Dougherty, a senior guard on the men's basketball team, was named Scholar-Athlete of the Month for his efforts on and off the court. The Fort Worth native started all six games in December and averaged 2.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. Against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Dougherty set a career high with six rebounds in the TCU victory. Dougherty currently ranks among the league's top-10 in assists and assist-to-turnover ratio. With a GPA of 3.215, Dougherty will graduate in May with a degree in finance and accounting.
Ashley Davis was named the Female Athlete of the Month after leading the Lady Frogs to an 8-1 record in the month of December. In TCU's upset of No. 17 DePaul, Davis matched her career-high with a game-high 23 points. Davis was 9-for-13 from the field, including 5-for-7 from long range. Against?Syracuse on Dec. 20, Davis led the Lady Frogs with 18 points on 5-for-9 shooting, adding three 3-pointers (3-7) and pulling in six rebounds. The San Antonio, Texas, native averaged 19.8 points per game and shot 52.0 percent from field goal range, including 53.6 percent from beyond the arc, during the month. She made 85.7 percent (42-47) of her free throws and pulled down 4.7 boards per game.
On Dec. 17 at No. 10 Georgia, Davis recorded her 1,000th career point and?became just the eighth player in TCU women¹s basketball history to have?earned the mark.
Cheryl Townsend, a sophomore on the women's swim team, was the recipient of the Female Scholar-Athlete of the Month award. Townsend earned the honor after an incredible weekend at the UNLV Winter Invitational on Dec. 16-18. Townsend led the TCU women in five events, all of which were top-five finishes.
In the first day of competition, Townsend placed fourth in the 500-free with a time of 5:03.99, and finished third in the 200-IM in a clocking of 2:08.35. Townsend picked up another third place finish the second day, swimming the 400-IM in a time of 4:28.11. Townsend racked up two more top-five finishes on the final day, with a third place showing in the 1650-free (17:19.75) and a fourth place finish in the 200-back (2:06.13). The Pietermartizburg, South Africa, native currently holds a GPA of 4.0.
