FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU swimming and diving team will visit Balmorhea State Park in Balmorhea, Texas, on Oct. 6, following their opening meets on Oct. 5 against McMurry University in Abilene, Texas, and the University of Texas Permian Basin in Midland, Texas.
A native of West Texas, TCU head swimming and diving coach Richard Sybesma spent many family vacations growing up at the Balmorhea pool.
"I think this is one of the best kept secrets in Texas," said Sybesma. "There has never been a collegiate swimming team practice in this facility and I wanted my team to experience the beauty of one of our Texas state park facilities.
"We will do a sprint workout involving straight sprints of almost 130 yards in the pool. This is a unique training opportunity for our team to experience since most collegiate pools are either 25 yards or 50 meters long. I am excited to do this type of training in a beautiful, older unusual setting."
Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) between 1936 and 1941, Balmorhea State Park pool is the largest spring fed pool in the United States. At 77,053 square feet, 22 to 28 million gallons of water flow through the San Soloman Spring each day.
