FT. WORTH, Texas - The No. 21 TCU Horned Frog football team practiced for the first time in preparation for the 2006 campaign Friday at the Morris Practice Fields. The squad worked for 26 periods in shorts, focusing on position work and fundamentals.
"If you want to have a team and have a bunch of guys play, you've got to step up to the plate," head coach Gary Patterson said. "I didn't think the first day was bad; we've got a long way to go if we want to win a championship."
The team will work out Saturday at 4 p.m. on the practice fields.
At the end of the day's work, Patterson had an optimistic outlook on the first day of practice.
"At times we were energetic," he said. "One of the things we do is focus on having fun and still working hard. At the end of practice, they were whooping and hollering but I don't think they were doing it as much in the middle of practice. The key is how you finish and that's why we run pursuit drills at the end of practice in 102-degree weather.
"Overall, I was real proud of how the guys played today. We don't do walk-throughs, we do run-throughs so they had to show up ready."
