A Look Back At The TCU Molten/LaQuinta Invitational:
The Frogs were the only undefeated team in the tournament as they matched the best start in school history with a 4-0 record. A three-game sweep of Loyola (MD) to open the season led into a dramatic come-from-behind victory over South Carolina in the nightcap. The Frogs were trailing 0-2 heading into the break and came out to steal the victory, winning the next three games to defeat the Gamecocks.
Saturday, the Frogs were forced to overcome the big-win hangover to defeat a great defensive squad in Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. After losing game one, the Frogs won the final three games to pick up their third win of the season. In the tournament finale, the Frogs came away with a 3-1 win over Boise State in another highly-contested match.
Anna Vaughn led the squad, averaging 3.88 kills per game. She paced the club with 62 kills in the four matches. A couple of freshmen had strong coming-out parties as Kourtney Edwards and Lauren Otto showed fans a glimpse of the future at TCU. Edwards tallied 24 kills and a team-high 18 blocks. Otto put away 50 kills in her first four collegiate games and picked up five service aces. Starting at the libero position, Calli Corley showed why she is the starter as she racked up 78 digs for an average of 4.88 per game. Nirelle Hampton was in midseason form as she set the Frogs up nicely, averagin 11.75 assists per game, including a career-high 56 assists against South Carolina
Vaughn Named Mountain West Player of the Week
Vaughn, a 6-2 senior from Grapevine, Texas, led the Horned Frogs to a 4-0 record and the tournament title, while being named Tournament MVP at the TCU Molten/LaQuinta Invitational last weekend. She tallied 10 kills and a .353 hitting percentage in a sweep over Loyola to open the tournament. In a five-game win vs. South Carolina, Vaughn had 19 kills, five blocks and digs and an assist, while hitting .515. After TCU lost the first two games vs. the Gamecocks, Vaughn collected eight kills and no hitting errors in the final three games in helping the Horned Frogs clinch the win. She followed with an 18 kill, three-dig performance vs. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and concluded the tournament with 15 kills, four blocks and two service aces in a 3-1 victory over Boise State.
The Series History
The Mavericks lead the all-time series, winning five times in six contests. The teams have not met on the court since UTA won a four-game affair on Oct. 30, 2001. The Frogs lone win in the series came on Sept. 12, 2000 in Fort Worth. TCU is 0-3 all-time in Arlington.
