About the Series
TCU will wrap up its 2006 home schedule Tuesday morning when it hosts UT-Arlington. The game will also mark the final non-conference game of the season. The Frogs are on a role with a three game win streak, while the Mavericks are stumbling into the contest with a two-game losing streak. TCU will be looking for the season sweep as it won an April 25 meeting in Arlington by a 16-6 score.
About The Frogs
The Frogs put together three complete games en route to a sweep of UT-Pan Am this past weekend. Pitching and defense was the story of the weekend, while the offense did just enough to bury the Broncs. The Frogs committed just one error on the weekend.
Offensively, Chad Huffman had an outstanding weekend, hitting .545 in the three games with four extra base hits and eight runs driven in. Austin Adams drove in the game-winning run in Sunday's come-from-behind victory. Jerid Buttell provided a spark in two starts this weekend, picking up a hit in all both contests. The Frogs will get a lift on Tuesday with the return of outfielder Keith Conlon, who will make his first appearance at the plate since April 30. He has missed the last seven games with a shoulder injury.
On the mound, a lot of guys got some innings, gearing up for the run for the tournament championship. Jake Arrieta threw three scoreless innings and Brad Furnish tossed five strong innings to get his sixth win of the season. Dillon Farish had the strongest weekend with 5.2 scoreless innings of relief. Shawn Ferguson and Omar Arif each picked up a save with at least two scoreless innings pitched. Chase Perry and Donald Furrow also had strong outings.
About The Mavericks
The Mavericks got off to a hot start in conference play, opening up 10-0, but have since hit the skids. They are 6-12 in their last six conference series. On the mound, UT-Arlington has pitched to the tune of a team ERA of 6.00 and are allowing its opponents to hit .319. Austin Bridges has the best numbers on the staff with a 4.79 ERA in 16 appearances. Chris Taylor is the saves leader with six. At the plate, they are lead by catcher Adam Moore's .365 average and eight home runs. His 43 RBIs pace the squad as well. As a team, they are hitting just .284 with 40 stolen bases. Defensively, they have made 76 errors on the year for a .963 fielding percentage.
The Starters
Brent Allar will make his first start of the 2006 campaign. The hard-throwing junior is 0-0 this season with a 12.27 ERA out of the bullpen. He has made 11 appearances this season and has tossed 11 innings. In those 11 innings, Allar has struck out 12 batters. He has held opponents scoreless in six of the 11 appearances. His last outing came on May 6 against Utah. He went two innings, gave up just two hits and walked one. He made an appearance against UTA on April 25. He surrendered two hits in an inning of work, walked one and struck out one without allowing a run.
The Mavericks have not named a starter for the game on Tuesday. A possible starter might be Austin Bridges, who has made nine starts in 16 appearances. He is 3-4 with a 4.79 ERA. Randy Cornejo or Erik Cartmill are also possibilities.
