SUNRIVER, Ore. - The TCU Horned Frogs got off to a good start in their quest for a sixth straight conference title by firing a 2-under-par 286 in the first round of the Mountain West Conference Championships at the Sunriver Resort's Crosswater Course. The third-place Horned Frogs, who are in their inaugural season in the MWC, are within two strokes of the lead, which is currently shared by No. 9 BYU and 34th-ranked New Mexico.
TCU is six shots ahead of eighth-rated UNLV (292) and eight in front of 21st-ranked San Diego State (294). Colorado State (301), Wyoming (302) and Air Force (320) round out the nine-team field.
"We played really well today," head coach Bill Montigel said. "We hung tough against some very good teams and put ourselves in a good position for the rest of the week. We're just going to continue to play one shot at a time."
True freshman Tom Miles paved the way for the Frogs, as he logged a 2-under round of 70. The Dublin, Ohio, product is in a four-way tie for second place, one shot off the pace, thanks to birdies on four of the opening six holes.
Junior Drew Stoltz, who shared medalist honors at last year's Conference USA Championships, is once again among the top 10 after a 1-under 71. The Colorado native, who is tied for sixth, opened the tournament with back-to-back birdies.
Another true freshman, Jon McLean, is tied for 11th place after a level-par 72. Only a double-bogey on the par-4 18th hole kept him from becoming the third Frog to post a red number on day one.
Franklin Corpening shot a 1-over-par 73 in round one. The sophomore is tied for 15th place individually after registering three birdies and four bogeys over the 18 holes. TCU's final participant, senior Drew Laning, is tied for 35th place after a 7-over score of 79.
The three-day, 54-hole event is being played at the Sunriver Resort's Crosswater Course (7,630 yards, par 72), the site of next month's NCAA Championships. The second round will be played Friday, with TCU teeing off beginning at 10:40 a.m. (PDT). Live scoring of the event will be available on www.golfstat.com as well as www.themwc.com.
