FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU sophomore right-handed pitcher Sam Demel was named Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week for his performance this past week. For the Frogs this is their fourth conference honor of the season. It also marks the first time in Demel's career that he has earned a Pitcher of the Week honor.
Demel, a Spring, Texas, native, collected a win and a save in three relief appearances for the Horned Frogs last week. In 5.2 innings on the mound, he surrendered no runs and one hit, while striking out six and walking two. His first appearance of the week came vs. then-No. 16 Oklahoma, where he took the mound with a runner on third and nobody out and struck out the only batter he faced. His second appearance came in game two vs. UNLV when he came on in the top of the ninth to shut down the Rebels' rally and collect his second save of the season in TCU's 9-7 win. In the final game of the series vs. UNLV, Demel pitched the final 4.2 innings of the game, striking out five and giving up one hit in the Horned Frog's 3-2 victory, earning his fifth win of the season.
Three other Horned Frogs have been honored by the conference the season. TCU swept the Hitter and Pitcher of the Week honors on Feb. 13. Matt McGuirk was named Hitter of the Week and Jake Arrieta earned Pitcher of the Week honors. On Feb. 20, Brad Furnish was named Pitcher of the Week.
