WACO, Texas - In a game that saw a multitude of weird plays, the Horned Frogs came up short as they fell 10-4 to No. 21 Baylor. The Frogs took the early 1-0 lead in the first, but some unlucky breaks and three errors led to eight straight runs by the Bears. Matt Carpenter had a good night at the plate as he was 4-for-5 with two RBIs.
TCU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single off the bat of Matt Carpenter. Chad Huffman and Keith Conlon both drew walks with one out setting up Carpenter's single.
In the bottom of the inning, the Bears scored three runs on two runs. After a lead-off walk and sacrifice bunt, four straight batters reached base. The Frogs looked like they got the ground ball they needed to come out of the inning unscathed, but it hit off the umpire's foot and all runners were safe. Matt Sodolak tied the game with a base hit and a wild pitch allowed the go-ahead run to score.
Another unusual play in the second led to the Bears fourth run of the game. Sodolak was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and stole second base. With the next batter in the box, the Frogs though he was hit by a pitch and the ball skipped back to the wall. Heads up base running by Sodolak on what was ruled a wild pitch put Baylor up 4-1.
The Bears extended their lead in the third as they sent nine batters to the plate and scored four runs. The big blow in the inning was a two-RBI single off the bat of Jeff Mandel. After three, the Bears led 8-1.
For the third straight inning, TCU saw their lead-off batter reach base. Austin Adams reached on an infield single and moved to third on a one-out single off the bat of Steven Trout. Corey Steglich hit a sacrifice fly to score Adams.
Kevin Sevigny hit his second home run of the game in the fifth inning, a two run shot that extended Baylor lead to 10-2.
The Frogs pushed across two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Bryan Kervin picked up a one-out single and moved to second on Huffman's third walk of the game. Carpenter picked up a two-out single to plate Kervin and a passed ball allowed the Frogs fourth run of the game to score.
Ferguson (2-3) went 2.1 innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on four hits. He walked two and struck out three. Dillon Farish worked 1.2 scoreless innings and Donald Furrow tossed two scoreless innings, striking out four.
The Frogs fall to 11-12 on the season and end a season-long eight game road swing. TCU will square off against UCF in a three-game series this weekend at Lupton Stadium. First pitch for Friday's opener is set for 7 p.m.
