FORT WORTH, Texas -- The No. 31 TCU women's golf team returns to action Friday when it begins play at the 36th-annual Lady Paladin Invitational in Greenville, S.C.TCU will be playing on the par 72, 6,103-yard Furman University Golf Course for the 13th consecutive year. The Horned Frogs shot a 39-over-par 903 to place third at last year's event. TCU senior Camille Blackerby was the individual runner-up with a 3-over 219, just one stroke behind medalist Christina Jones of USF.
The 54-hole tournament runs through Sunday. In addition to the Frogs and host No. 33 Furman, the 17-team field includes No. 35 Augusta State, Coastal Carolina, East Tennessee State, Florida International, Kennesaw State, No. 47 Memphis, Minnesota, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington, No. 17 Northwestern, South Florida, Winthrop and Wofford. A total of 11 teams ranked in the Golfweek/Sagarin top 100 will participate.
The Lady Paladin Invitational will be the third of TCU's five fall tournaments. The Frogs were fourth at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational (Sept. 11-12) and second at the Jeannine McHaney Intercollegiate (Sept. 18-19).
TCU senior Catherine Matranga, September's Mountain West Conference Women's Golfer of the Month, tops the league in stroke average at 70.8. She captured the individual title at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational when she rallied from a five-stroke deficit to overtake 10 golfers in the final round. Matranga then tied for second at the Jeannine McHaney Intercollegiate.
Blackerby (73.5) and Elin Emanuelsson (74.2) rank fourth and seventh, respectively, in the MWC in stroke average. Freshmen Megan O'Donnell (77.0) and Ashley Watkins (77.3) also place in the top 20 in scoring.
