FORT WORTH, Texas -- The TCU football team held its first scrimmage of preseason camp this morning."We were able to play everybody but still had a lot that weren't able to go because of bumps and bruises," Horned Frogs' coach Gary Patterson said.
"We went with our ones, twos and threes on defense so they could all get in their tackling. All of our new guys were able to get an opportunity to see what it's like in college football."
Frog quarterbacks combined to complete 14-of-26 pass attempts for 176 yards with just one interception. Senior starter Tye Gunn was 4-of-5 for 58 yards. Chad Huffman went 5-of-8 for 83 yards, including a 44-yard completion to Quentily Harmon.
Harmon had two receptions for 57 yards, while Walter Bryant had a team-best three grabs for 50 yards. Nine Frogs combined for the 14 receptions.
"I thought the quarterbacks did a great job in managing the game and we tackled pretty well," Patterson said. "We still have to defend the deep ball better. Besides that, though, I thought it was a good day."
Defensive highlights included an interception by tackle Jarrarcea Williams and a fumble recovery by freshman cornerback Corderra Hunter. Tatum, Texas, native and freshman safety Stephen Hodge had a big hit.
The Frogs will hold their second session of two-a-days with practices at 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. tomorrow.
"We'll come back tomorrow with practices nine and 10," Patterson said. "We then have a huge scrimmage on Monday. We're excited where we're at right now."
TCU, with six bowl trips in the last seven seasons, opens the 2005 campaign Sept. 3 at No. 5 Oklahoma. The game will be seen regionally on ABC-TV.
