"First of all, (my wife) Peggy and I are delighted to be here. I'd like to say thank you to Chancellor (Victor) Boschini, the search firm (Baker-Parker) and everyone that was involved in this process.
"This is a great job at TCU. There are five things that make this an attractive job. First, it's a wonderful university and academic institution playing at the highest level of athletics. America needs places like this.
"Second, (former athletics director) Eric Hyman; what a job he did for this place over the past seven years. He really made this an attractive job.
"Third, I've known (Mountain West Conference commissioner) Craig Thompson for several years, and I'm excited about being in the Mountain West Conference. I'd like to say thank you to him for being here today.
"Fourth, what a location. Everybody that I've met here says it's great. And, I like hot weather.
"Lastly, we can talk about facilities, budgets and finances, but what it all really comes down to is people. I've met with coaches, faculty and staff through this process, and the most fun I had was yesterday when I got the chance to spend time with (football student-athlete) Tye Gunn, (women's basketball student-athlete) Ashley Davis, (men's basketball student-athlete) Nile Murry and (women's tennis student-athlete) Kewa Nichols.
"I wish you could have been there with me when they showed me the facilities and when I got to sit down and talk about TCU with them. What I learned is that the student-athletes love it here. That's a credit to the coaches, faculty, staff and what Eric did here. This truly is a special place.
"I'm not lying when I say the stars might have been lined up right for this. A week ago, I had a lot of meetings in Charleston, (South Carolina). When I got into the hotel, I threw some change down and flipped up my laptop. I got an e-mail from the search firm to come to TCU for the first interview. When I looked to the right (of my laptop), I saw a quarter with the state of Texas on it.
"The very next morning, Friday, I went down to breakfast and read the paper. I noticed a gentleman sitting by me was wearing a gray t-shirt that said TCU on it.
"I would like to say one thing about the Southern Conference. It has been wonderful to me; the presidents, the ADs, the FARs; all of them have been great to me. You get opportunities to do other things like this when you have great people around you.
"I'm delighted to be here, and I look forward to meeting everyone."
