The annual TCU Night of Champions is set for Thursday, March 3 in Daniel-Meyer Coliseum on the TCU campus. The event, which is free and open to the public, begins at 6:00 p.m. and is a precursor to the start of spring practice.
"The Night of Champions is a culmination of our off-season conditioning program," said TCU Strength and Conditioning Coach Don Sommer. "It's a showcase event where the some of our strongest athletes compete in the bench press, incline, squat and power clean lifts."
The players compete for the coveted Iron Frog Award, which is based on a Power Index (PI). The PI is determined by adding the combined weight lifted in the bench press, squat and power clean, divided by the player's weight. The award is given in four categories: down players (under 260 pounds), down players (over 260 pounds), standup players (fullbacks, tight ends and linebackers) and skill players (quarterbacks, tailbacks, receivers, defensive backs and kickers).
The Horned Frogs will officially begin spring practice drills on Saturday, March 5. That will mark the first of 15 spring practices, culminating in the annual Spring Game on Saturday, April 9.
The Horned Frogs will use the spring drills to begin preparation for the 2005 football season, their first in the Mountain West Conference. The Frogs will open the season with a pair of non-conference road games at Oklahoma on September 3 and at SMU on September 10. Their final non-conference tilt will be in Amon G. Carter Stadium on Saturday, October 15 against Army. The Mountain West Conference schedule has not been finalized, but the Frogs are slated to host Colorado State, New Mexico, UNLV and Utah and have road games at Air Force, BYU, San Diego State and Wyoming.
