FORT WORTH, Texas -- The Mountain West Conference champion and 14th-ranked TCU football team will be on the field for 3:45 p.m. practices Saturday and Sunday. The Horned Frogs (10-1) have already had three practices since beginning preparation last weekend for Iowa State in the Dec. 31 EV1.net Houston Bowl.
"We're just trying to knock the rust off," TCU coach Gary Patterson said. "We've also got final exams coming up.
"We're trying to get as good as we can against each other and back to the speed of the game. We'll also start our game plan against Iowa State."
Following Sunday's practice, the Frogs will break for final exams before returning to the field next Friday, Dec. 16.
The 49-day break between the end of TCU's regular season (Nov. 12) and the EV1.net Houston Bowl (Dec. 31) is tied for the longest layoff ever nationally. In 1999, Wisconsin also had a 49-day break between the end of its regular season (Nov. 13) and a Jan. 1 Rose Bowl appearance.
TCU did not surrender a touchdown in its final two regular-season games with the opposition reaching the end zone just twice in the last 14 quarters dating back to Oct. 22.
In the last six games, the Frog defense has allowed just 11.7 points, 101.8 yards rushing and 200.2 passing for a total of 302.0.
Offensively, the Frogs are nearing a pair of school records.
TCU's 47 touchdowns this year are just two shy of the single-season school record 49 set in 2000. This year's total is third all-time in Horned Frog history, one behind last season's mark of 48.
The 371 points scored by TCU represent its second-best single-season total, behind only the school mark of 410 established in 2000.
