ST. LOUIS -- The Sporting News has named TCU linebacker Jason Phillips a second-team Freshman All-American with tailback Aaron Brown an honorable-mention Freshman All-America selection.Phillips has started all 11 games while tying for the TCU lead with 63 tackles. He places fourth on the Horned Frogs with 7.5 stops for a loss, including a tackle behind the line of scrimmage in eight contests.
A native of Waller, Texas, Phillips totaled a season-best 10 stops, including eight solo, in a win over New Mexico and posted nine tackles in the nationally-televised victory versus Utah to snap the Utes' 18-game winning streak. In his first collegiate game, Phillips had a tackle for a 5-yard loss in a win at Oklahoma.
Phillips was previously named second-team All-Mountain West Conference, becoming the first freshman defensive player in league history to be named first or second-team All-MWC.
Brown, the MWC Freshman of the Year, has rushed for 710 yards while posting the highest per carry average (6.1) among the MWC's top 10 rushers. He ranks 12th nationally among true freshmen in rushing yards and in a tie for sixth with his three 100-yard games.
A Katy, Texas, native, Brown was named the MWC Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for a season-high 163 yards on 17 carries in the 23-20 win versus Utah. He ran for three scores and 105 yards in a regular-season closing 51-3 victory over UNLV.
Brown is just the second TCU football player to be named a league Freshman of the Year. Lonta Hobbs received the honor from Conference USA in 2002.
