FORT WORTH, Texas - The White team regained the series edge with a 7-0 win over the Purple team, Friday afternoon at Lupton Stadium. White now leads the series 2-1. Sam Demel was dominating on the mound for the White team as he threw six scoreless innings, holding the Purple squad to just two hits and striking out five.
White wasted no time jumping on top as they took advantage of two throwing errors by Purple starting pitcher Shawn Ferguson. Steven Trout drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on the first throwing error and came home on a RBI-single off the bat of Keith Conlon. After swiping second, Conlon came around on a RBI single from Derek VerHagen.
The White squad tacked on another run in the top of the second to take a commanding 3-0 lead. Ben Carruthers drew a lead off walk and moved to third on two wild pitches. A Jerid Buttell doubled plated Carruthers.
Demel was in control on the mound, not allowing more than one base runner in any inning. After an Andrew Walker single to lead off the second inning, Demel sent down the next 10 batters he faced before Hunt Woodruff reached via the hit by pitch.
White extended their lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning on a single hit. Aaron Smith led off the inning with a base knock. Carruthers was hit by a pitch and Buttell walked to load the bases, ending Ferguson's day. In relief, Jake Friemel induced a sacrifice fly off the bat of Trout. After another hit-by-pitch, Friemel issued a bases loaded walk to VerHagen before getting Corey Steglich to ground out to end the inning. Two more runs crossed the plate for White in the seventh inning to account for the final score.
Purple's only real threat in the contest came in the bottom of the seventh off of reliever Kody Haverkamp. Austin Adams reached with a lead-off single, but was erased on a double play ball off the bat of Walker. Matt Carpenter drew a two-out walk and moved to third on an error by Steglich to extend the inning. Haverkamp bore down and got Matt Vern to fly out to end the inning.
Game four of the best-of-five series is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start on Saturday afternoon at Lupton Stadium. Omar Arif will get the call for Purple and face White's Donald Furrow.
