The TCU football squad went through a 102 play controlled scrimmage on Tuesday morning on the W.A. "Monty & Tex" Moncrief Field at Amon G. Carter Stadium. The first down chains did not move during the scrimmage, but rather the ball was returned to the same starting yard line after each play, limiting the scoring opportunities in the contest. "It's always hard to tell with these (scrimmages)," said TCU Head Coach Gary Patterson following the workout. "The good part about today is we went over 100 plays, which we went in intending to do. I thought there were less busts on offense than we've had in the past in these types of scrimmages. We've gotten better on defense the last three days. We gave up two passes, but I thought we did some good things and we need to keep doing that. Our `twos' on both sides of the ball have a long way to go," continued Patterson. "We need to keep getting better. We're not where we need to be with them. We play our `twos' a lot." The offense got off to a fast start, racking up 76 yards in the first five plays of the scrimmage, but the defense settled in and held the offense in check for much of the remainder of the scrimmage. The offense finished with 267 yards in the 102 plays, an average of 2.6 yards per play. The rushing attack gained just 24 yards in 57 carries, while the seven quarterbacks completed 21-of-45 passes for 243 yards. The lone touchdown came on a pass from backup quarterback James Battle to wide receiver Michael DePriest. DePriest took the short pass and burst past the defense, racing 40 yards to the endzone for a score. Junior safety Flander Malone picked off a Brandon Hassell pass for the lone turnover of the day. In the battle for the number one quarterback position, junior Tye Gunn completed 3-of-8 passes for 66 yards, including a 32-yard strike to Quentily Harmon on the first play from scrimmage, while Hassell hit on 3-of-7 passes for 11 yards. "I thought they did well," said Patterson of the quarterbacks. "Brandon threw the one pick and Tye had the one play where he messed up the trap. Besides that, I thought they managed the game pretty well." "I thought we came out strong, but we need to finish stronger," said Gunn. "We had a few dropped balls, a few bad throws, but that all goes with the first scrimmage. I am finally getting the rust off and feeling sharp again. For the most part, all of our installation is done. We're just fine-tuning the small things." "I am really excited for Flander," added Patterson. "Every practice he's had an interception or had something big happen. That is one place where we didn't have a starter coming back. Since the very first day (of fall camp) he's been playing well." "I feel like the leadership from some of my teammates, the good grace of God and staying healthy has allowed me the chance to get better everyday," said Malone. "Coach gave me a word - `consistency.' I just take that in every day. Every time he says something to me I look at him and say, `consistency.' I just move forward each day." The Frogs continue their fall camp on Wednesday with two practices scheduled for 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. as they prepare for their season opener on Thursday, September 2 when they host the Northwestern Wildcats in an 8:30 p.m. start.
