The TCU Horned Frogs continued their fall workouts Monday morning with the first of two practices scheduled for the day. Once again, comfortable temperatures greeted the players for the two-hour session. Here are some quotes following the practice:
QUOTES FROM AUGUST 16
Quoting Coach Patterson
"We're tired because basically, we've only had a half a day off. The team pushed through the practice this morning. Reggie Harrell pulled a groin and will be a day-to-day guy. We have two-a-days and also a scrimmage tomorrow. We have to keep pushing to be better."
On what he wants to see in Tuesday's scrimmage:
"When you're in a scrimmage situations, you've got to learn to play physical. Teams that don't know what to do don't play fast. We've got to get to a point where we play fast."
On redshirt freshman David Hawthorne:
"He's doing really good. He had a nice pick in team period today. He is a redshirt freshman, but he has done a lot of good things. We like the way he plays, he runs to the ball really well."
"He is the number one right now. He took every snap with the first unit. He did a better job in the scrimmage on Saturday. It's an evaluation, if Logo does a better job in the scrimmage than (Hawthorne) does tomorrow, then it changes up. It's an everyday deal."
What impresses you about Hawthorne:
"Number one, he runs a 4.6. He's a freshman and he has the instincts of a linebacker that makes plays."
Quoting place kicker Peter LoCoco
On the competition with Mike Wynn to be starting kicker
"For the most part it isn't about going against Mike Wynn, I am just coming out here everyday working on my technique.
"There are a lot of guys relying on me, so I am just trying to come out here and do my job."
On kicking range:
"Consistently, I can probably put it in from the 52-53 yard range. If the coaches ask, I can probably put it in from 55-56, but 52 is pretty consistent."
On replacing Nick Browne:
"It's tough. Nick is a great kicker and it's tough to fill his shoes. Being in his shadow for the last three years is tough, but again we're out there backing up the rest of the team. We have guys out there busting their butts every day, all game and my job is to put the ball through the uprights and put points on the board."
Quoting David Hawthorne
On coming in to practice and competing for starting job
"From last spring on, I was rotating in with the ones. I was doing decent, and I was trying to move up. I just stayed focused and worked hard. The coaches always say the best players play, so I was just playing hard and keeping my mind straight."
"When I came in, I had a focus to get on something (special teams). My whole life I've never stood on the sidelines, except for last year when I was redshirting. My main focus this year was to get on the field."
On how Martin Patterson and Logo Tevaseu have helped him:
"Martin (Patterson) has helped me to keep my head on straight. He's told me not to get down because I have a lot to learn. Logo is a workhorse. He's helped me stay motivated in the weight room and in running/conditioning."
On competition with Logo Tevaseu
"Logo and I compete. We are out here everyday competing. With Logo and I, it is really who can eliminate the most mistakes first. We both came in around the same time. He is a little older, but we came in and learned the defense around the same time."
