Fort Worth, Texas - Robin Jentes from Conference USA today announced Dominika Szabo as C-USA Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 28. This marks the first time a volleyball Horned Frog has received the honor.
Szabo, a junior outside hitter from Eger, Hungary, helped the team to a 3-1 record last week and earned All-Tournament honors at the TCU Molten Invitational. She hit an impressive .435 against St. Francis (Pa.) with 12 kills and two errors in 23 attempts, preceded by a .632 performance against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, with 13 kills and one error in 29 attempts. The clincher was her standout performance against Grambling State, when she momentarily flirted with the NCAA hitting record of .955; she instead broke the school hitting percentage record with a whopping .842 average, killing 17 balls with a mere one error in 19 attempts. The previous record was set by Allison Lynch against Villanova in 1999, which stood at .813. In all, Szabo picked up 55 kills, 30 digs, and 62.5 points, along with six service aces and three blocks.
"This is a well-deserved and long-awaited honor for Domi Szabo," Coach Prentice Lewis said. "Domi has worked very hard for the last two years trying to earn this honor, and we're very excited as staff. This is the first time any of our volleyball athletes have won. We are thrilled with Domi getting this honor; we are trying to do things better and better every year, our players keep getting better and better, and we're working to get more of them as players of the week."
The team also managed to twice break the program's team hitting percentage record, due in large part to Szabo's outstanding offensive performance. Saturday, the Frogs tallied a .443 against Grambling State, only to be followed by a dynamite .612 performance later that night against TAMU-CC. The old record was .411, set in 1997 against Stephen F. Austin.
This year, Szabo has earned All-Tournament team honors three out of four tournaments. Last year, Szabo earned All-Conference accolades when she received third-team All-Conference after also being named to all four preseason tournament teams.
The Frogs' record stands at 13-4, the best start in school history and already more wins than last year's 12-18 total.
