Fort Worth, Texas - The Frogs hit the ground running this afternoon against Grambling State, winning in three games and setting new school records in the process in their first match of the TCU Molten Invitational.
Junior outside hitter Dominika Szabo flirted with a national individual hitting record, leaving the match with 17 kills and one error in 19 attempts, giving her a .842 average. She also picked up two aces and six digs for TCU.
This was no one-woman show by any means, however, with all the Frogs in a Purple and White uniform contributing to the win. As a team, they hit .443, breaking the school record set in 1997. Earlier in the year, TCU came close to breaking the record in the match against Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the TCU adidas Invitational, when they racked up a .408 team hitting percentage. Sophomore setter Skye Tacker and senior Tori Barlow split the assists, Tacker picking up another 22 while Barlow racked up another 19 to march her further up in the record books. Junior Ellen Rehme had 11 kills with one error for a .526 hitting average, freshman Emily Allen dished in six kills, and sophomore Hayley Harmon put in five kills.
Grambling State played scrappy against the Frogs, their offense making TCU jump through hoops to keep ahead of them. Freshman Lacey Cormie'r led the Tigers, slamming home 13 kills in 23 attempts. Junior setter Lequia Collins set up 19 assists for her hitters and senior middle blocker Kimberly Davis dug up six balls to keep in play. "Domi played very well with the stats she brought to the win," Coach Prentice Lewis commented after the match. "I'm very pleased with everyone getting in to play, everyone playing well, and, as a team, hitting great."
The Horned Frogs improved their record to 11-3 in the win against Grambling State. Next up, they take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 7:30 p.m. before tomorrow's matches against Saint Francis (3-6 overall, 0-1 in the Molten Invitational) Saint Mary's (10-4 overall, 1-0 in the Molten Invitational). Earlier in the day, Saint Mary's took Saint Francis in three games. Corpus Christi and Saint Mary's battle it out at 2:30 p.m. today.
