Aundre Edwards won the long jump competition and the men's 4x400 meter relay team logged the fastest time in the nation this season, highlighting TCU's performance on the second day of the 109th running of the Penn Relays, held Friday at Franklin Field.
Edwards, a junior from Kingston, Jamaica, matched his season best mark with a jump of 7.99 meters (26-02.75) to win the long jump title. He logged the same mark a week ago in winning the long jump competition at the TCU Invitational. The fifth-place finisher at last year's NCAA Outdoor Championships came up just shy of his career-best mark of 8.00 meters.
The men's 4x400 meter relay team turned in the fastest collegiate time in the nation this season with a 3:03.65 clocking in Friday's prelims. It was the sixth fastest time in school history and the fastest for a Flyin' Frog foursome since 1986. The Frog quartet of Jabari Fields, Brandon Simpson, Jackson Langat and Jerry Harris clipped off five and half seconds off their previous best time of 3:09.02 this season. The quartet finished second at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March.
The men's 4x100 meter relay team also had a strong showing in Friday's prelims. The quartet of David Spencer, Fields, Harris and Jermaine Joseph clocked a heat-winning time of 39.87, and will go into Saturday's finals with the third best mark.
On the women's side, the 4x100 meter relay squad took a fourth place finish in Friday's finals. The quartet of La' Toya White, Donita Harmon, Tiffany Starts and Monica Twum, circled the track in 44.43 seconds, behind only LSU, Auburn and Texas. Meanwhile, the 4x200 meter relay team of White, Harmon, Larissa Bakasa and Twum, clocked a heat-winning time of 1:34.93 and will advance to Saturday's finals with the seventh fastest time.
In other action on Friday, Cleavon Dillon placed 10th in the long jump with a best jump of 7.18 meters (23-06.75) and Reggie Harrell was bumped on the fourth hurdle and finished the 110 meter hurdle prelims with a time of 14.07.
"It was an excellent day," said TCU Head Coach Monte Stratton. "That's two good days in a row. If we can have another one tomorrow, you can call it a streak."
The meet concludes on Saturday at Franklin Field. The Frogs will be represented in the men's 4x100 and 4x400 finals and the women's 4x200 finals. In addition, Nathaniel Garcia will compete in the 400 meter hurdles and Brandal Lawrence will challenge for the triple jump crown.
