Louisville, Ky. - Just two days after Louisville's football team lost to TCU, the Purple and White volleyball squad headed north to Kentucky, hoping to continue the Horned Frog week over Conference USA rival Cardinals. It was not to be, however, as the Frogs fell in four games to No. 23 Cardinals, going 16-30, 17-30, 30-26, 16-30.
The Frogs' tough play showed signs of unraveling halfway through the first game, falling behind early on, losing the game 30-16, unable to play with the offensive firepower necessary to compete with the nationally-ranked Cardinals. Louisville hit .324 to TCU's .026, sophomore Lena Ustymenko shoveling the most onto TCU with six kills in 11 attempts.
By the end of the second game, Louisville had collected a total of 10 aces against the Frogs, catching them off-guard time after time. The Frogs had not yet started to have fun, but that changed in the third game. TCU came back with smiles on their faces after the break, and proceeded to startle both the Cardinals and the Cardinal fans with their grit and persistence, winning the third game to avoid the sweep. The fourth game passed quickly into Louisville's hands, leaving the Frogs with another tough C-USA loss.
"Our passing was a problem," Coach Prentice Lewis pointed out. "But my main thing was, I told them to come out and play as hard as they could."
Ellen Rehme performed the best for TCU, killing 13 and digging 14. Domi Szabo added 18 digs and 9 kills while Jessica Fleming dug up 14 potential kills. Lean Ustymekno led the Cardinals with 22 kills in 47 attempts, with Sonja Percan trailing with 16 kills and 10 digs. Candace Cogan collected 19 digs.
The Horned Frogs are now 17-11 and 3-7 in Conference USA. They travel to across the river to take on No. 24 Cincinnati tomorrow night. The match begins at 6:30 p.m. CDT.
