BOZEMAN, Mont. - The TCU volleyball team dropped its opening match at the Mizuno-Holiday Inn Classic hosted by Montana State University. The Frogs, now 0-5, fell to the undefeated host Bobcats in a three-game match with scores of 30-21, 30-12 and 30-25.
In game one, the Frogs' only lead came when they were up 3-2 on a serve from senior Marci King. The Bobcats' serving was strong behind Karin Lundqvist and Kamber Kelly, and the Cats won game one 30-21.
Game two was one in which every TCU hole was visible to Montana State. MSU hit numerous kills in to the midst of the Frogs, and capitalized on every TCU mistake. The Frogs fell behind from the beginning and couldn't catch up, dropping game two 30-12.
The Frogs seemed to put things together in the third game. After playing well for most of the game, the team had two service errors fairly late in the game, that handed MSU two points in the rally scoring format. After the tough game two, game three was one head coach Sandy Troudt had hoped the Frogs could take, but couldn't get over the hump, falling 30-25.
"We wanted to force their crowd to stay a little longer. MSU got some good points early and really capitalized on that. They (MSU) were really hot, especially since it was their first home match and they had a great crowd," according to Troudt. "Rachel (Shirley) had a really good night for us. Our season starts tomorrow."
King led the Frogs in kills (8) and along with freshman Dominika Szabo led in digs (8). Senior Lindsay Hayes had 13 assists for the Frogs, and senior Allison Lynch posted four blocks.
TCU will try to turn the corner when they match up with the University of Denver and Indiana State on Saturday in the Mizuno-Holiday Inn Classic, then return home for the TCU Invitational on September 14-15.
