FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU volleyball team continued their winning ways with a 3-2 victory over neighboring North Texas (4-6) tonight in Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The Frogs are now 4-0 in matches against UNT, and 2-6 on the 2001 season. In addition to the victory, senior Marci King broke the school career double-double record with her 21 kills and 11 digs for the evening.
TCU was out-hit in game one .267 to .290, but managed to come out on the winning end by a score of 30-26. The Frogs hitting improved in game two, as they hit a quality .316 on 16 kills and 4 errors on 38 attacks, taking the game 30-20.
UNT decided to make things interesting in games three and four with good serving and tough defense. Game three was the Eagles' from the beginning, as they refused to relinquish control and won 30-23. TCU worked not to let UNT get out to the same quick start and hung in throughout the game, however, UNT took game four 30-27.
The fifth and deciding game went back and forth, until TCU took the lead at the halfway point and never looked back. The Frogs gave their crowd what they'd come for when they won the game 15-10 and the match 3-2.
"North Texas played hard," said TCU head coach Sandy Troudt following the match. "Kristin Sheppard does a really nice job."
"Marci (King) had a good night again for us. I'm pleased she broke the (career double-double) record at home. Jennifer Cuca had some good kills, great opportunities and good serves. She was a real mainstay for us tonight."
"We had some mental trouble with our service game. It can't be very often that you make 19 service errors and win a match. We are still making too many mistakes and our blocking can still improve."
The Frogs were led for the evening by Marci King in kills (21), by senior Lindsay Hayes in assists (29) and blocks (6), by King and fellow senior Allison Lynch in digs (11 each) and by sophomore Tori Barlow for aces (4).
TCU continues their homestand when they host Southern Miss on Thursday, September 20 at 7:00 p.m. in Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The match will be the first Conference USA event for any TCU squad since the school joined C-USA on July 1, 2001.
