TCU Rallies to Beat Nevada, 8-7

RENO, Nev. -- Walter Olmstead drove in two runs, including a run-scoring single in the ninth to lift TCU to a dramatic 8-7 win over Nevada Saturday at Peccole Park. The Frogs improve to 22-14 overall, 13-6 in Western Athletic Conference play. The Wolf Pack drop to 19-16 overall, 10-10 in WAC action. With the win, TCU has matched their win total from the 2000 season.
The Frogs rallied for four runs, scoring two in both the eighth and ninth innings, erasing Nevada's 6-3 lead. In the eighth, Mike Settle singled and scored on Jonathan Marshall's double. On the play, the Wolf Pack committed two throwing errors, allowing Marshall to score, tying the game at 6-6. In the ninth, TCU put together four consecutive singles to take the lead. Erick Macha reached on an infield hit, stole second and scored on Walter Olmstead's base hit. Tom Bates followed with a single, then Jason Price drove in Olmstead with the fourth hit in the inning. Chris Dickerson homered in the ninth, his second home run of the game to pull Nevada to within one run. After Ryan Strain singled, TCU right fielder Jason Price caught a deep fly ball at the wall, robbing pinch hitter Curtis Wickwire of an extra-base hit. Winning pitcher Stan Newton forced Joey Herrera to ground out to end the game.
Newton earned the win, allowing one run on three hits in 2.0 innings pitched. Terry Trofholz kept the Frogs in the game, pitching 2.1 scoreless innings of middle relief. In his first appearance of the season, Trofholz struck out three and did not allow a hit. He walked one and hit two batters in the outing. TCU starter Justin Crowder allowed six runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings. Nevada reliever George Moran suffered the loss. He allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits in 3.0 innings. Nevada starter Darrell Rasner allowed four runs in 6.0 innings. In the third, TCU scored the first run when Trofholz reached on a fielders choice, stole second and third bases, then trotted home on Rudy Rivera's groundout. In the bottom half of the inning, the Wolf Pack exploded for four runs, all coming with two outs. Mike Gillies' two-run single accounted for the first two runs, then Jarell McIntyre followed with a two-run double to increase the Nevada lead to 4-1. TCU picked up two runs in the fifth on three hits, including run-scoring singles by Macha and Olmstead to pull within one run at 4-3. The Wolf Pack got both runs back in the bottom half of the inning to increase the lead to 6-3.
Olmstead and Marshall led TCU with three hits and two runs batted in. Macha and Bates each had two hits as the Frogs outhit Nevada, 14-12.
TCU won the series opener on Thursday with a 12-7 win. Nevada took game two by a score of 15-7. The fourth and final game of the series is scheduled for Sunday afternoon. First-pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. Pacific time (3 p.m. central time).
