FROGS TRAVEL TO RENO FOR FOUR-GAME SERIES AGAINST NEVADA
The TCU Horned Frogs (20-13, 11-5 WAC) travel to Reno, Nevada this weekend,
Thursday-Sunday (April 5-8) for a key four-game series against the Nevada
Wolf Pack (18-14, 9-8 WAC). The Frogs have dropped four straight, including
a 9-5 loss at Oklahoma on Tuesday. TCU will serve as the home team in the
opening game of the Nevada series, in order to complete the rain-shortened
series from March 9-11. The Frogs were swept last weekend by top-ranked
Rice, ending a seven-game winning streak. Nevada has won 13 of the last 16
games, including two of three last weekend at Fresno State.
104th SEASON OF TCU BASEBALL
This is the 104th edition of TCU baseball. The Frogs have an all-time mark
of 1522-1320-25 for a winning percentage of .536. Last year, the Frogs
recorded a 22-34 win-loss mark, including a 12-18 record in conference play.
Next season, TCU will become a member of Conference USA.
WAC PLAY
The Frogs are in their fifth and final season in the Western Athletic
Conference. TCU has compiled a conference record of 75-59-0 in five WAC
seasons. Last year, TCU ended conference play with a record of 12-18. Always
tough at the TCU Diamond, the Frogs have a record of 44-23 in home (WAC)
conference games. On the road, the Frogs have compiled a record of 31-36 in
WAC games.
GAME COVERAGE
TCU baseball is carried on KTCU 88.7 FM with Chuck LaMendola calling the
action. TCU fans can access the radio broadcast of any TCU game from
anywhere in the world via the internet at www.ktcu.tcu.edu. The TCU pregame
show will begin 15 minutes before the first pitch of every TCU game.
HEAD COACH LANCE BROWN
The 2001 Horned Frogs are under the guidance of head coach Lance Brown (TCU,
1967). Brown, TCU’s all-time winningest coach, has a record of 440-415. In
his 15th season at TCU, Brown is assisted by Donnie Watson, Barry Takahashi
and Tom Hardgrove.
TCU-NEVADA SERIES
When TCU and Nevada begin play on Thursday afternoon, it will be the third
meeting between the two schools... the series is tied at 1-1... both
contests were played at the TCU Diamond earlier in March... this is TCU’s
first and last trip to Reno as a member of the Western Athletic Conference.
REVISED SCHEDULE
In addition to the makeup game on Thursday at Nevada, the Frogs have a number
of other schedule changes... the Texas Tech contest that was postponed on
Feb. 27 has been rescheduled for Wednesday, April 11... TCU and UTA have
added a contest for April 12 at the TCU Diamond... due to the rainout at San
Jose State, the Frogs and Spartans will play a four-game series when San
Jose State visits Fort Worth... the two teams will play a single games on
Friday (April 27) and Sunday (Apri 29), and a doubleheader on Saturday
(April 28)...the start time for the Hawaii contest scheduled for Sunday,
April 15 has been pushed back to 2:35 p.m... the game was originally
scheduled to start at 1:05 p.m.
RICE RECAP
Rice held TCU to five runs and 18 hits over three games to sweep the Frogs,
5-3, 4-1 and 7-1... Rice, the top-ranked team in the nation won the opener,
5-3, behind the pitching of Kenny Baugh... the preseason All-American struck
out 15, throwing 148 pitches in the complete game effort... Erick Macha led
the Frogs with three hits, while Ramon Moses had two hits, including a
triple... in game two, Rice built an early 3-0 lead, scoring twice in the
first inning and once in the third... Jeff Nichols held the Frogs to an
unearned run in six innings to earn the win... TCU starter Justin Crowder
allowed two runs on four hits in the first inning, then pitched well,
holding Rice to five hits in the next five innings... Clayton Jerome pitched
the final three innings, holding the Owls to two walks and three K’s...
Terry Trofholz had two hits to lead the Frogs... in the finale, the Owls
outhit TCU, 16-3 to win, 7-1... in the series, the Frogs hit only .125
(3-24) with runners in scoring position, and .188 overall (18-96).
OKLAHOMA RECAP
Oklahoma’s Greg Dobbs drove in four runs on three hits, leading the Sooners
to a 9-5 win Tuesday at L. Dale Mitchell Park... Dobbs’ two-run double
highlighted a four-run first inning for the Sooners... the Frogs rallied for
three runs in the second on back to back doubles by Walter Olmstead and Mike
Settle, then a two-run home run by Jonathan Marshall...TCU then took a 5-4
lead in the third, scoring two runs on a Erick Macha run-scoring single and
a Settle RBI-basehit... the Sooners tied the game in the bottom half of the
inning on Dobbs’ triple and a fielding error by Levi Robinson... OU added
insurance runs late in the game to extend the lead to 9-5... neither of the
starting pitchers received a decision... TCU starter Clayton Jerome allowed
five runs on six hits in 3.0 innings... Chris Frazier allowed three runs on
five hits in 3.0 innings... OU starter Michael Bradbury allowed five runs in
2.1 innings... Austin Coose pitched 3.2 scoreless innings.
LAST TIME vs. NEVADA
TCU and Nevada split a rain-shortened series with the Frogs winning game one,
8-5, then Nevada picking up the win in the second game, 5-3... the third
game was rained out... in the opener, Rudy Rivera’s two-run single in the
eighth inning lifted TCU to the win... Nevada scored one run in top of the
8th to take a 4-3 lead, then in the bottom half of the inning, the Frogs
reclaimed the lead, scoring five runs on only one base hit, the Rivera
single to right field... in the 8th, TCU benefited from five walks, a sac
bunt and a a throwing error... Erick Macha hit a two-run home run in the
fifth, his third in three games... Patrick Newburn allowed one run on three
hits in 2.1 innings to earn the win in relief... Chris Bradshaw allowed four
runs, one earned on 10 hits, two walks and nine strikeouts in 6.2 innings...
Olmstead’s three hits and Macha’s three runs batted in paced the TCU hitting
attack... in game two, Nevada scored four runs in the first two innings to
defeat TCU, 5-3... the Wolf Pack scored three unearned runs in the first on
three hits and a TCU fielding error by Macha... in the 2nd, Nevada scored
one run on two hits... they increased the lead to 5-1 in the fourth, scoring
one run on three consecutive two-out basehits... the Frogs plated one run in
the third on a Mike Settle triple and a Terry Trofholz groundout... TCU
scored twice in the 5th on three hits and an error by the Wolf Pack... TCU
left at least one man on base in five of the last eight innings... Darrell
Rasner earned the win, his third of the year, allowing three runs on eight
hits in 7.0 innings... George Moran pitched two scoreless innings to earn a
save... Justin Crowder allowed five runs in six innings with nine
strikeouts.
