Frogs Start Busy Week With Non-Conference Game at Oklahoma

104th SEASON OF TCU BASEBALL
This is the 104th edition of TCU baseball. The Frogs have an all-time mark
of 1522-1319-25 for a winning percentage of .536. Last year, the Frogs
recorded a 22-34 win-loss mark, including a 12-18 record in conference play.
Next season, TCU will become a member of Conference USA.
WAC PLAY
The Frogs are in their fifth and final season in the Western Athletic
Conference. TCU has compiled a conference record of 75-59-0 in five WAC
seasons. Last year, TCU ended conference play with a record of 12-18. Always
tough at the TCU Diamond, the Frogs have a record of 44-23 in home (WAC)
conference games. On the road, the Frogs have compiled a record of 31-36 in
WAC games.
GAME COVERAGE
TCU baseball is carried on KTCU 88.7 FM with Chuck LaMendola calling the
action. TCU fans can access the radio broadcast of any TCU game from
anywhere in the world via the internet at www.ktcu.tcu.edu. The TCU pregame
show will begin 15 minutes before the first pitch of every TCU game.
HEAD COACH LANCE BROWN
The 2001 Horned Frogs are under the guidance of head coach Lance Brown (TCU,
1967). Brown, TCU’s all-time winningest coach, has a record of 440-414. In
his 15th season at TCU, Brown is assisted by Donnie Watson, Barry Takahashi
and Tom Hardgrove.
TCU-OKLAHOMA SERIES
When TCU and Oklahoma begin play on Tuesday, it will be the 66th meeting
between the two teams... the Frogs trail in the overall series, 20-45-0...
earlier this season, TCU defeated Oklahoma, 6-1, behind the pitching of
David Tombrella... before the win by TCU, the Sooners had won nine straight
games against the Frogs... all nine of the games had been decided by three
runs or less... last year, Oklahoma defeated TCU, 16-13, in a game that was
started in Fort Worth (suspended by rain) and then completed in Norman... OU
then won the second game, 5-2... the Frogs last win over OU, in Norman, came
in the 1996 season.
REVISED SCHEDULE
In addition to the makeup game on Thursday at Nevada, the Frogs have a number
of other schedule changes... due to the rainout at San Jose State, the Frogs
and Spartans will play a four-game series when San Jose visits Fort Worth...
the Texas Tech contest that was postponed on Feb. 27 has been rescheduled
for Wednesday, April 11... TCU and UTA have added a contest for April 12 at
the TCU Diamond.
RICE RECAP
Rice held TCU to five runs and 18 hits over three games to sweep the Frogs,
5-3, 4-1 and 7-1... Rice, the top-ranked team in the nation won the opener,
5-3, behind the pitching of Kenny Baugh... the preseason All-American struck
out 15, throwing 148 pitches in the complete game effort... Erick Macha led
the Frogs with three hits, while Ramon Moses had two hits, including a
triple... in game two, Rice built an early 3-0 lead, scoring twice in the
first inning and once in the third... Jeff Nichols held the Frogs to an
unearned run in six innings to earn the win... TCU starter Justin Crowder
allowed two runs on four hits in the first inning, then pitched well,
holding Rice to five hits in the next five innings... Clayton Jerome pitched
the final three innings, holding the Owls to two walks and three K’s...
Terry Trofholz had two hits to lead the Frogs... in the finale, the Owls
outhit TCU, 16-3 to win, 7-1... in the series, the Frogs hit only .125
(3-24) with runners in scoring position, and .188 overall (18-96).
LAST MEETING VS. OKLAHOMA
David Tombrella pitched eight solid innings, holding the Sooners to one run
on six hits... the win was TCU’s first over Oklahoma since a 21-9 victory in
1996, a span of nine games... Tombrella allowed his defense to do the work,
as he induced 18 groundball outs, including two double plays... Walter
Olmstead led the Frogs with three hits, two runs batted in... Rudy Rivera,
Jason Price, Terry Trofholz each had two hits... Price hit a solo home run,
his second of the year.
DIAMOND NOTES
The Frogs lead the WAC in team batting with a .318 batting average... the
Frogs are also first in runs scored, triples and walks... TCU easily set a
season-high total for hits (24) in the 29-4 win over Iowa State... beginning
with the Iowa State contest, the Frogs had six straight games with at least
11 hits... since then, the Frogs have only 25 hits in the last four games...
the Frogs had 18 hits in both game two and three of the Hawaii series...
before the Iowa State game, the Frogs’ previous season-high of 18 came in
the second game of a doubleheader vs. Texas Pan American... the Frogs have
now scored at least 2o runs in a game twice... they scored 21 runs against
Pan Am... the last time TCU scored at least 20 runs in a game was March 23,
1999, when TCU scored 23 against UTA... when the Frogs score first, they
are 17-3... when the opponent scores first, TCU is 3-9... all three wins
occurred on the Hawaii trip... dating back to the 1997 season, the Frogs are
93-46 when they put the first run on the scoreboard... with 20 wins, the
Frogs are two wins away from the 2000 full-season total of 22... this
season, the Frogs are 4-1 in Tuesday games... last season, TCU finished 2-6
in Tuesday games... the Frogs have already posted two wins over the Texas
Longhorns, including a win at Disch-Falk Field in Austin... the win at
Disch-Falk was the second in the last four years, and only the fifth
all-time... overall, TCU is 4-3 against teams from the Big 12 conference...
beginning with last weekend’s series against Rice, the Frogs are in a
stretch of games, where they will play 21 of 25 games against teams that
participated in the 2000 NCAA baseball tournament.
