Terry Trofholz' two-out walk in the ninth got things started for the Frogs. Erick Macha followed with a double down the left field line, scoring Trofholz and tying the game at 5-5. The Rainbows went to the lefty-lefty matchup, bringing in left handed pitcher Aaron Pribble to face the left handed hitting Tom Bates. For the second consecutive day, Bates came up with the big hit, drilling a run-scoring single up the middle to score Macha for the game-winning runn. In yesterday's 5-4 win, Bates' two-run single in the eighth helped TCU overcome a Hawaii lead.
The top three hitters in the TCU lineup, Trofholz, Macha and Bates, combined for nine hits, five doubles, five runs, four RBIs and two walks in 12 at-bats. Trofholz tied the single-game school record for doubles with three, while Macha added two doubles to his total. Bates led the team with three RBI.
The Rainbows scored three in the eighth and once in the ninth to take the 5-4 lead. The Frogs had led the entire game until Hawaii took the lead in the top of the ninth. Danny Kimura's two-run double highlighted the eighth inning, then in the ninth, Lane Nogawa's two-out base hit drove in Art Guillen.
TCU scored single runs in the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead. Trofholz' first inning double was the first of six doubles on the day by the Frogs. Trofholz came around to score on a failed pickoff attempt by the Rainbows. In the second, Ramon Moses walked, stole second and scored on Rudy Rivera's base hit. In the third, Trofholz again had a leadoff double. Bates picked up his first RBI of the day on a single to center field, scoring Trofholz.
TCU set a school record for assists in the game with 23, largely because of Moses. The sophomore second baseman tied his own school record for assists with 10. Starting pitcher David Tombrella scattered nine hits, allowing four runs in 7.1 innings. Patrick Newburn allowed one run on one hit in one inning pitched. Stan Newton, who allowed the Nogawa hit in the ninth, picked up the win, his fourth of the year in 0.2 innings.
Hawaii pitcher Chad Gianetti suffered the loss. He allowed four runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings of relief. Gianetti replaced starter Wakon Childers after two innings.
The Frogs return to action on Tuesday, April 17, when they host the Texas Longhorns at The Ballpark in Arlington. First-pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Tickets are $5 and they can be purchased at the Texas Rangers box office at The Ballpark.
