TCU Set to Host Nevada

The TCU Horned Frogs (12-7, 4-1) will resume Western Athletic Conference play this weekend, when they host WAC newcomer Nevada (8-11, 4-5) in a three-game series. The Frogs and Wolfpack will play single games on Friday (Mar. 9), Saturday (Mar. 10) and Sunday (Mar. 11). The Frogs have played four non-conference games since the series at San Jose State. While the Frogs have won eight of the last 10 games, Nevada has won six of the last eight games they have played.
104th SEASON OF TCU BASEBALL
This is the 104th edition of TCU baseball. The Frogs have an all-time mark
of 1514-1314-25 for a winning percentage of .534. Last year, the Frogs
recorded a 22-34 win-loss mark, including a 12-18 record in conference play.
Next season, TCU will become a member of Conference USA.
WAC PLAY
The Frogs are in their fifth and final season in the Western Athletic
Conference. TCU has compiled a conference record of 68-55-0 in five WAC
seasons. Last year, TCU ended conference play with a record of 12-18. Always
tough at the TCU Diamond, the Frogs have a record of 43-19 in home (WAC)
conference games. On the road, the Frogs have compiled a record of 25-36 in
WAC games.
GAME COVERAGE
TCU baseball is carried on KTCU 88.7 FM with Chuck LaMendola calling the
action. TCU fans can access the radio broadcast of any TCU game from
anywhere in the world via the internet at www.ktcu.tcu.edu. The TCU pregame
show will begin 15 minutes before the first pitch of every TCU game.
HEAD COACH LANCE BROWN
The 2001 Horned Frogs are under the guidance of head coach Lance Brown (TCU,
1967). Brown, TCU's all-time winningest coach, has a record of 432-408. In
his 15th season at TCU, Brown is assisted by Donnie Watson, Barry Takahashi
and Tom Hardgrove.
TCU-NEVADA SERIES
This will be the first meeting between the two teams on the diamond... Nevada
is in their first season as a member of the WAC... last season, they won the
Big West regular-season title and advanced to the NCAA Regionals.
TOUGH SCHEDULE
The Frogs are scheduled to play 35 games against teams that participated in
the 2000 NCAA baseball tournament, including the six games against Nevada...
thus far, TCU has a record of 4-5 in the first nine games against these
opponents... overall, 24 of the 35 games are against WAC opponents... Rice,
Fresno State, San Jose State and WAC newcomer Nevada all advanced to the
NCAA Regionals... San Jose State reached the College World Series... the
remaining 11 games are against Texas Tech, Baylor, Texas, Southwest Texas
and Oklahoma... the Frogs will play a total of 11 games this season against
members of the Big 12... TCU will face Texas Tech (3 games), Baylor (1
game), Texas (3 games), Kansas (1 game), Oklahoma (2 games) and Iowa State
(1 game)... thus far, the Frogs are 3-3 against the Big 12 with wins coming
against Texas and Oklahoma.
REVISED SCHEDULE
Due to all of the recent rainouts, the Frogs have a number of schedule
changes... due to the Saturday, Feb. 24th rainout at San Jose State, the
Frogs and Spartans will play a four-game series when San Jose visits Fort
Worth... the Texas Tech contest that was postponed on Feb. 27 has been
rescheduled for April 11.
DIAMOND NOTES
TCU has won 12 of the first 19 games played... last season, the Frogs did not
win 12 games until the 33rd game of the year... entering this weekend's
action, the Frogs are first in the WAC in hitting (.317), second in fielding
percentage (.971) and third in ERA (4.13)... plus, TCU leads the WAC in
walks, runs scored, triples, and the pitching staff leads the league in
fewest walks allowed... in TCU's 12 wins, the Frogs have outscored their
opponents by 106 runs (126-20)... in the seven losses by the Frogs, they
have been outscored by 39 runs (66-27)... the Frogs have done most of the
damage offensively in the first three innings... entering the Nevada series,
the Frogs have scored 79 runs in the first three innings (32 in the first,
25 in the second and 22 in the third)... while opponents have scored only 17
runs in the first thru third innings... TCU has reached double figures in
runs scored six times... they scored at least 10 runs in only seven games
last season... in games played at the TCU Diamond, the Frogs are hitting
.383 with 108 runs scored, while opponent's are hitting only .219 with 22
runs scored... the team ERA at the TCU Diamond is 2.66... this season, the
Frogs are 4-0 in Tuesday games... last season, TCU finished 2-6 in Tuesday
games... TCU already has 15 triples this year, nine shy of the 2000 season
total of 24... Rudy Rivera leads the team with four... entering the Nevada
series, Erick Macha has a career-best 12-game hitting streak... Macha is the
third TCU player to have a hitting streak reach double digits... Mike Settle
had a 11-game hitting streak, and Jason Price had a 10-game streak... Walter
Olmstead is either first or second in the WAC in batting average, hits, runs
batted in, doubles, triples, home runs and total bases... Macha has one
triple this season, raising his career total to 14... he is tied with Brad
Wallace for first in career triples... Settle is second to Olmstead in
multi-RBI games with seven... Tom Bates has already walked 12 times, which
surpasses his career total of nine from the last three seasons... last
year, he walked three times in 157 plate appearances... senior Marshall
Wilson, who underwent shoulder surgery on Feb. 9 will redshirt this
season... Jared Lundeen will also redshirt after suffering a shoulder injury
in the first week of the year.
FROGS BEAT TEXAS, IN AUSTIN
For only the 10th time in school history, the Frogs defeated the Texas
Longhorns in Austin... in Tuesday's 7-2 win, Erick Macha's three-run home
run, and David Tombrella and Clayton Jerome's clutch pitching allowed TCU to
post their second win of the year against the Horns... Macha's three-run
home run came in the first inning, and the Frogs added four insurance runs
in the eighth... all seven runs came were scored with two outs... Tombrella
pitched the first five innings, holding Texas to two runs on six hits to
earn his second win of the season... Clayton Jerome shutout Texas in the
last four innings to earn his first career save... Jerome also picked up a
win against Texas earlier in the year... Terry Trofholz led TCU with two
hits, while Macha and Walter Olmstead combined to drive in five runs.
SOUTHWEST TEXAS SLUGS TCU, 9-4
Southwest Texas had nine extra base hits, including four home runs Wednesday
to defeat TCU, 9-4... starting pitcher Chris Frazier allowed all four of the
longballs... overall, SWT had 12 hits, while the Frogs managed only seven,
two by Erick Macha, including a solo home run in the 8th.
