104th SEASON OF TCU BASEBALL
This is the 104th edition of TCU baseball. The Frogs have an all-time mark
of 1513-1313-25 for a winning percentage of .534. Last year, the Frogs
recorded a 22-34 win-loss mark, including a 12-18 record in conference play.
Next season, TCU will become a member of Conference USA.
WAC PLAY
The Frogs are in their fifth and final season in the Western Athletic
Conference. TCU has compiled a conference record of 68-55-0 in five WAC
seasons. Last year, TCU ended conference play with a record of 12-18. Always
tough at the TCU Diamond, the Frogs have a record of 43-19 in home (WAC)
conference games. On the road, the Frogs have compiled a record of 25-36 in
WAC games.
GAME COVERAGE
TCU baseball is carried on KTCU 88.7 FM with Chuck LaMendola calling the
action. TCU fans can access the radio broadcast of any TCU game from
anywhere in the world via the internet at www.ktcu.tcu.edu. The TCU pregame
show will begin 15 minutes before the first pitch of every TCU game.
HEAD COACH LANCE BROWN
The 2001 Horned Frogs are under the guidance of head coach Lance Brown (TCU,
1967). Brown, TCU’s all-time winningest coach, has a record of 431-408. In
his 15th season at TCU, Brown is assisted by Donnie Watson, Barry Takahashi
and Tom Hardgrove.
TCU-TEXAS SERIES
When the Frogs and Longhorns get things started Tuesday afternoon, it will be
the 268th meeting between the two schools... the series dates back to
1897... this will be the second of three games this year between the two
teams... TCU defeated Texas, 2-1, at the Astros College Classic at Enron
Field... the Frogs held the Longhorns to only four hits, while Walter
Olmstead, Justin Crowder and Rudy Rivera each had two hits... on April 17,
the Frogs will host Texas at The Ballpark in Arlington...TCU trails in the
overall series, 53-212-2... since the SWC ended in 1996, TCU is 3-7 against
Texas... in the only meeting last season, Texas won 17-15, in Austin ...
Texas put together a late rally, scoring 10 runs in the 6th thru 8th
innings... while the Frogs outhit the Horns, 18-16, the TCU pitching staff
walked eight men... TCU’s last win in Austin came in the 1999 season, when
the Frogs won 11-2.
TCU-SOUTHWEST TEXAS SERIES
This will be the 22nd meeting between the two schools, and the second this
season... the Frogs lead the overall series, 14-7-0... SWT won the earlier
meeting, 16-4 at the Dell Diamond... last season, the two teams split four
games with Southwest Texas winning twice in Fort Worth... TCU won the
opener, 6-3, then dropped the final two games, 9-6 (14 innings) and 15-5...
TCU defeated SWT, 8-3, in the first NCAA D-I baseball game at the new Dell
Diamond... in 1998, TCU and Southwest Texas split a two-game series at San
Marcos... the Frogs won the opener, 7-6, then dropped game two, 6-3.
DIAMOND NOTES
TCU has won 11 of the first 17 games played... last season, the Frogs did not
win 11 games until the 31st first game of the year... entering this week’s
action, the Frogs are first in the WAC in hitting (.330), second in fielding
percentage (.969) and third in ERA (4.11)... plus, TCU leads the WAC in
walks, runs scored, triples, and the pitching staff leads the league in
fewest walks allowed... in TCU’s 11 wins, the Frogs have outscored their
opponents by 101 runs (119-18)... in the six losses by the Frogs, they have
been outscored by 34 runs (57-23)... the Frogs have done most of the damage
offensively in the first three innings... thru Sunday’s doubleheader sweep
of Pan Am, the Frogs have scored 76 runs in the first three innings (29 in
the first, 25 in the second and 22 in the third)... while opponents have
scored only 14 runs in the first thru third innings... TCU has reached
double figures in runs scored six times... they scored at least 10 runs in
only seven games last season... the Frogs already have 17 triples this
season, seven shy of the 2000 season total of 24... Rudy Rivera leads the
team with four... entering Tuesday’s game at Texas, Erick Macha has a
10-game hitting streak... Macha is the third TCU player to have a hitting
streak reach double digits... Mike Settle had a 11-game hitting streak, and
Jason Price had a 10-game streak... Walter Olmstead is either first or
second in the WAC in batting average, hits, runs batted in, doubles,
triples, home runs and total bases... Macha has one triple this season,
raising his career total to 14... he is tied with Brad Wallace for first in
career triples... Mike Settle is tied with Olmstead for the team lead in
multi-RBI games with seven... Tom Bates has already walked 10 times, which
surpasses his career total of nine from the last three seasons... last
year, he walked three times in 157 plate appearances... senior Marshall
Wilson, who underwent shoulder surgery on Feb. 9 will redshirt this
season... Jared Lundeen will also redshirt after suffering a shoulder injury
in the first week of the year.
TCU SWEEPS UTPA IN DOUBLEHEADER
Finally, after three consecutive rainouts, TCU returned to play Sunday,
sweeping a doubleheader against Texas-Pan American at the TCU Diamond... the
Frogs won the opener, 9-5, then took game two by a score of 21-2. The Frogs
improve to 11-6 overall, while UTPA drops to 1-17... the Frogs won the first
game on the strength of a seven-run second inning... all five of TCU’s hits
in the contest came in the second inning... Ramon Moses drove in three on a
bases loaded triple, and Walter Olmstead knocked in two runs on a double...
TCU had only the five hits in the game, but they walked seven times and
reached twice after being hit by a pitch... Chris Bradshaw (4-1) earned the
win, allowing four runs in five innings with eight strikeouts... Stan Newton
pitched the final two innings, striking out three to earn his second save of
the season... Newton entered the game in the sixth with the bases loaded and
no outs... he retired all three men he faced in the inning, allowing one run
on a groundout... in the second game, TCU had season-highs in both runs and
hits to complete the sweep... the Frogs scored one run in the first, when
Terry Trofholz stole home... after adding two more runs in the second, the
Frogs put together back-to-back seven run innings, increasing the lead to
17-1... in the third, the seven runs came on only three hits, including a
grand slam by Olmstead, as the Frogs took advantage of three walks, a hit
batsmen and two UTPA errors... the TCU bats did the damage in the fourth,
scoring the seven runs on nine hits, including a two-run double by Tom
Bates... all seven runs came with two outs in the inning... Trofholz, Bates
and Jason Price each had three hits, while Olmstead and Bates drove in five
runs apiece... Justin Crowder (3-1) earned the win, allowing one run in 2.2
innings of middle relief. Chad Durham started the game, but was pulled in
the third. Durham allowed one run on one hit, two walks, a hit batsmen and
five strikeouts. The TCU pitching staff recorded 12 K’s in the second game
after striking out 11 in the opener.
