Rice Defeats TCU, 5-3

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Kenny Baugh scattered nine hits and struck out 15 to lead the Rice Owls to a 5-3 win over TCU Friday at the TCU Diamond. The Frogs drop to 20-10 overall, 11-3 in Western Athletic Conference action. Rice, the top-ranked team in the nation, improves to 26-6 overall, 15-1 in WAC play. The loss ended TCU's seven-game winning streak.
Baugh and TCU starter Chris Bradshaw were locked in a pitchers' duel for the first four innings. Baugh allowed only four hits in the first four innings, striking out six. Bradshaw allowed only two hits in the first four frames, striking out four.
The Owls scored a run in the fifth on two hits, including a two-out RBI-single by A.J. Porfirio. Hunter Brown increased the lead to 2-0 in the sixth, when he hit his fifth home run of the year. Austin Davis' two-run home run in the seventh, lifted the score to 4-0.
Baugh allowed three runs on nine hits and four walks, throwing 148 pitches in the complete-game performance. Bradshaw allowed four runs on seven hits, four walks and four strikeouts in six innings pitched.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Frogs came up with a pair of runs on three hits. Jason Price singled and scored on Ramon Moses' triple to right center. After a strikeout and consecutive walks to Rudy Rivera and Tom Bates, Erick Macha singled home Moses to close the deficit to 4-2. Macha led the Frogs with three hits, while Moses had two hits.
In the eighth, the Owls pushed the lead to 5-2, scoring an unearned run on a pair of throwing errors. Cade Harris' solo home run to start the bottom half of the inning made the score 5-3.
Both teams had plenty of chances as the Owls stranded nine men, while TCU left 10 men on base, including three in the seventh. The Frogs also turned two double plays. Baugh struck out at least one batter in every inning, including three in the eighth and ninth innings.
The series will resume on Saturday (March 31) with first-pitch scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
