Baseball to host Texas-Pan American

The TCU Horned Frogs (9-6) return to action Saturday (Mar. 3), when they open a three-game series against Texas-Pan American (1-14) at the TCU Diamond. The Frogs were originally scheduled to play five games this week, but due to the inclement weather in the state of Texas, the contests against Texas Tech and UTA were postponed. TCU will face UTPA at 2:00 p.m. Saturday and a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 12:05 p.m. The Texas Tech game has been rescheduled for April 11, and the UTA game will be played as part of a doubleheader on March 28.
104th SEASON OF TCU BASEBALL
This is the 104th edition of TCU baseball. The Frogs have an all-time mark
of 1511-1313-25 for a winning percentage of .534. Last year, the Frogs
recorded a 22-34 win-loss mark, including a 12-18 record in conference play.
Next season, TCU will become a member of Conference USA.
WAC PLAY
The Frogs are in their fifth and final season in the Western Athletic
Conference. TCU has compiled a conference record of 68-55-0 in five WAC
seasons. Last season, TCU ended conference play with a record of 12-18.
Always tough at the TCU Diamond, the Frogs have a record of 43-19 in home
(WAC) conference games. On the road, the Frogs have compiled a record of
25-36 in WAC games.
GAME COVERAGE
TCU baseball is carried on KTCU 88.7 FM with Chuck LaMendola calling the
action. TCU fans can access the radio broadcast of any TCU game from
anywhere in the world via the internet at www.ktcu.tcu.edu. The TCU pregame
show will begin 15 minutes before the first pitch of every TCU game.
HEAD COACH LANCE BROWN
The 2001 Horned Frogs are under the guidance of head coach Lance Brown (TCU,
1967). Brown, TCU's all-time winningest coach, has a record of 429-408. In
his 15th season at TCU, Brown is assisted by Donnie Watson, Barry Takahashi
and Tom Hardgrove.
TCU-UTPA SERIES
When the Frogs and Broncs get things started Saturday afternoon, it will be
the 34th meeting between the two schools... TCU leads in the overall series,
20-12-1... the two teams last met in the 1996 season, when the Frogs won two
of three (7-2, 8-7, 8-9) at UTPA...Pan Am last travelled to Fort Worth in
the 1987 season... the Frogs won three of four (10-5, 5-9, 8-4, 4-1) in the
series... Lance Brown has a record of 5-2 against Pan Am.
SAN JOSE STATE RECAP
TCU and San Jose State split a rain-shortened two-game series... the series
was orginally scheduled to be a three-game series... TCU won the opener,
5-3, behind the pitching of Chris Bradshaw and Stan Newton... Bradshaw (3-1)
allowed three earned runs on five hits, one walk with six strikeouts in 7.2
innings... Newton pitched the final 1.1 innings, recording three strikeouts
to earn his first save of the season... he entered the game in the 8th
inning with two outs, runners at second and third, and the Frogs leading by
one run... he struck out Ryan Adams on three pitches to end the inning, then
retired the Spartans in order in the 9th... Mike Settle's two-run home run
in the 8th inning proved to be the difference in the game... Erick Macha had
three hits, and Justin Crowder and Jason Price each had two hits... in the
finale, San Jose scored five runs in the sixth inning to win 8-2... pitcher
Tim Adinolfi silenced the TCU bats, recording nine strikeouts in seven
innings... as a team, TCU had only six hits, including two by Settle.
TOUGH SCHEDULE
The Frogs are scheduled to play 35 games against teams that participated in
the 2000 NCAA baseball tournament, including the three against Texas Tech...
overall, 24 of the 35 games are against WAC opponents... Rice, Fresno State,
San Jose State and WAC newcomer Nevada all advanced to the NCAA Regionals...
San Jose State reached the College World Series... the remaining 11 games
are against Texas Tech, Baylor, Texas, Southwest Texas and Oklahoma... the
Frogs will play a total of 11 games this season against members of the Big
12... TCU will face Texas Tech (3 games), Baylor (1 game), Texas (3 games),
Kansas (1 game), Oklahoma (2 games) and Iowa State (1 game)... thus far,
the Frogs are 2-3 against the Big 12 with wins coming against Texas and
Oklahoma.
DIAMOND NOTES
TCU's five-game winning streak that ended last Sunday at San Jose State was
the longest since they won six straight in 1999... entering this week's
action, the Frogs are first in the WAC in hitting, second in ERA and second
in fielding percentage... in TCU's nine wins, the Frogs are hitting .370 and
they have outscored their opponents by 78 runs (89-11)... plus, they have
committed only five errors and posted a team ERA of 1.32... however, in the
six losses by the Frogs, they are hitting .251, having been outscored by 34
runs (57-23)... they have committed 12 errors and have a team ERA of 8.12...
Jason Price's 10-game hitting streak ended last Sunday... Price hit .457
(16-35) in the 10-game streak... Walter Olmstead is among the WAC leaders in
average, hits, runs, RBIs, and total bases... Erick Macha has one triple
this season, raising his career total to 14... he is tied with Brad Wallace
for first in career triples... sophomore third baseman Mike Settle leads the
team and WAC in runs batted in with 19... he also leads the team in
multi-RBI games with seven... outfielder Tom Bates has already walked nine
times, whic equals his career total... last season, he walked three times in
157 plate appearances... dating back to last season, 2B Ramon Moses has
committed only three errors in the last 139 total chances (.978 fielding
pct.), a span of 33 games... Chris Bradshaw has allowed only nine earned
runs in five starts... senior Marshall Wilson, who underwent shoulder
surgery on Feb. 9 will redshirt this season... Jared Lundeen will also
redshirt after suffering a shoulder injury in the first week of the year.
