FROGS HEAD TO THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS FOR FINAL TIME
The TCU Horned Frogs (14-9, 5-2) will travel to the Hawaiian Islands for six
games, three at Hawaii and three at Hawaii-Hilo. The Frogs will face the
Rainbows March 17-19 in a three-game set. TCU will then travel to the Big
Island to face the Vulcans, March 22-24, in a three game series. Hawaii
(8-13, 3-9) defeated Rice last Saturday (Mar. 10) to avoid being swept by
the Owls. While the Frogs are playing at Hawaii, Hilo (3-17, 2-10) will be
at Nevada for a three-game series.
104th SEASON OF TCU BASEBALL
This is the 104th edition of TCU baseball. The Frogs have an all-time mark
of 1516-1316-25 for a winning percentage of .534. Last year, the Frogs
recorded a 22-34 win-loss mark, including a 12-18 record in conference play.
Next season, TCU will become a member of Conference USA.
WAC PLAY
The Frogs are in their fifth and final season in the Western Athletic
Conference. TCU has compiled a conference record of 69-56-0 in five WAC
seasons. Last year, TCU ended conference play with a record of 12-18. Always
tough at the TCU Diamond, the Frogs have a record of 44-20 in home (WAC)
conference games. On the road, the Frogs have compiled a record of 25-36 in
WAC games.
GAME COVERAGE
TCU baseball is carried on KTCU 88.7 FM with Chuck LaMendola calling the
action. TCU fans can access the radio broadcast of any TCU game from
anywhere in the world via the internet at www.ktcu.tcu.edu. The TCU pregame
show will begin 15 minutes before the first pitch of every TCU game.
HEAD COACH LANCE BROWN
The 2001 Horned Frogs are under the guidance of head coach Lance Brown (TCU,
1967). Brown, TCU’s all-time winningest coach, has a record of 434-411. In
his 15th season at TCU, Brown is assisted by Donnie Watson, Barry Takahashi
and Tom Hardgrove.
TCU-HAWAII SERIES
When TCU and Hawaii begin play on Saturday, it will be the 15th meeting
between the two teams... the Frogs lead in the overall series, 9-5-0...
last season, the Rainbows won four of six, including all three games at
Rainbow Stadium... in the games played at Rainbow Stadium, the Frogs lost by
scores of 6-2, 3-2, 14-6... overall, TCU has a record of 2-4 at Rainbow
Stadium... in the 1998 season, TCU won two of three at Hawaii... TCU has a
5-1 record in home games against Hawaii, and a 2-0 win-loss mark in neutral
sites.
TCU-HILO SERIES
The Frogs and Vulcans will meet on the diamond for the 15th time... TCU leads
in the overall series, 10-4-0... earlier this season, the Frogs swept Hilo
(14-2, 6-1, 12-0) in a three-game series... last season, TCU lost two of
three at Hilo (6-3, 2-3 (10 innings), 6-10)... the Frogs are 6-0 vs. Hilo at
the TCU Diamond, and 4-4 in games played on the Big Island... this is the
last scheduled meeting between the two teams.
TOUGH SCHEDULE
The Frogs are scheduled to play 35 games against teams that participated in
the 2000 NCAA baseball tournament... thus far, TCU has a record of 4-5 in
the first nine games against these opponents... overall, 24 of the 35 games
are against WAC opponents... Rice, Fresno State, San Jose State and WAC
newcomer Nevada all advanced to the NCAA Regionals... San Jose State reached
the College World Series... the remaining 11 games are against Texas Tech,
Baylor, Texas, Southwest Texas and Oklahoma... the Frogs will play a total
of 11 games this season against members of the Big 12... TCU will face Texas
Tech (3 games), Baylor (1 game), Texas (3 games), Kansas (1 game), Oklahoma
(2 games) and Iowa State (1 game)... thus far, the Frogs are 4-3 against
the Big 12 with two wins coming against Texas and one vs. Oklahoma.
REVISED SCHEDULE
Due to all of the recent rainouts, the Frogs have a number of schedule
changes... due to the rainout at San Jose State, the Frogs and Spartans will
play a four-game series when San Jose visits Fort Worth... the Texas Tech
contest that was postponed on Feb. 27 has been rescheduled for April 11...
TCU and UTA have added a contest for April 12 at the TCU Diamond... and, the
Frogs and Nevada will play a four-game series in Reno, due the rainout on
March 11.
UTA RECAP
UTA scored four runs in the fifth inning to defeat visiting TCU, 5-3, Tuesday
at Allan Saxe Stadium. The game was scheduled at the last minute, replacing
the TCU-UTA game that was rained out on February 28... the Mavericks scored
four runs in the fifth on three hits, a pair of walks and a wild pitch,
lifting the Mavericks to the 4-2 lead... K.J. Hendricks and Jason Severson
delivered consecutive run-scoring base hits, then Daniel Ortmeier sacrifice
fly brought home the final run of the inning... the Frogs scored single runs
in the second, third and ninth innings... Tom Bates homered to lead off the
second inning, his second home run of the year, allowing the Frogs to take
a 1-0 lead... TCU increased the lead to 2-0 in the third, when Rudy Rivera,
who had doubled to start the inning, scored on Erick Macha’s sacrifice
fly... Mike Settle homered in the ninth to account for the final run...
Bates and Settle each had two hits to lead the Frogs... TCU starter Chad
Durham (2-1) suffered his first loss of the year... he allowed four runs on
six hits, five walks and five strikeouts in 6.0 innings... Clayton Jerome
pitched a scoreless seventh inning, then Stan Newton allowed an unearned run
in the eighth... UTA reliever Dave Engelson, who improved to 2-2 this
season, struck out six in 3.0 scoreless innings of relief... UTA starter
Michael Snapp allowed two earned runs on five hits in three innings of
work... overall, the Mavericks recorded 13 strikeouts, including 11 in the
last six innings...TCU had eight basehits in the game, but only three after
the third inning.
A RECORD-SETTING DAY, TCU BEATS IOWA STATE 29-4
TCU set school records in runs (29), home runs (9), runs batted in (29) and
total bases (57) to defeat Iowa State, 29-4, Thursday at the TCU Diamond...
en route to the school-record setting day, TCU scored at least one run in
every inning, including nine in the second and eight in the eighth inning...
the 29 runs broke the previous record of 28 vs. Dallas University in the
1967 season... the nine home runs eclipsed the previous record of eight,
which the Frogs set against BYU in 1998 and UNLV in 1997... included in the
total of nine home runs were grand slams by Justin Crowder and Trey
Crawford... Rudy Rivera hit two on the day, and Kenny Thompson, Jeff Reed,
Crowder, Crawford, Levi Robinson and Jonathan Marshall all hit their first
career home runs... overall, TCU had 24 hits to raise the team batting
average by 13 points to .326... Erick Macha had two hits, including his
school-record setting 15th career triple... Rivera and Crowder each had six
runs batted in... Fourteen players had at least one hit, including all nine
starters... Rivera led the team with four hits, including the two home runs,
and shortstop Rudy Ontiveros had three hits and scored four runs... David
Tombrella earned the win for the Frogs... he allowed two runs on seven hits
in 7.0 innings pitched, raising his record to 3-1 this season.
AT THE PLATE
The Frogs easily set a season-high total for hits (24) in the 29-4 win over
Iowa State... the Frogs’ previous season-high of 18 came in the second game
of a doubleheader vs. Texas Pan American... in between the two games, the
Frogs reached double figures in hits in only one of the five games... the
Frogs have now scored at least 2o runs in a game twice... they scored 21
runs against Pan Am... the last time TCU scored at least 20 runs in a game
was March 23, 1999, when TCU scored 23 against UTA... when the Frogs score
first, they are 14-3... when the opponent scores first, TCU is 0-6... dating
back to the 1997 season, the Frogs are 90-46 when they put the first run on
the scoreboard... the Frogs have done most of the damage offensively in the
first three innings... entering the Hawaii series, the Frogs have scored 94
runs in the first three innings (34 in the first, 35 in the second and 25 in
the third)... thus far, TCU is 11-2 when they have at least 10 hits in a
game... in the last five seasons, the Frogs are 95-45 when they have at
least 10 hits in a game... the Frogs are hitting .366 (15-41) with three
grand slams when hitting with the bases loaded... Erick Macha’s 14-game
hitting streak came to an end in the 5-3 loss at UTA... the streak was a
career-best for the junior shortstop... Macha was the third TCU player to
have a hitting streak reach double digits... overall, Macha has hit safely
in 20-of-23 games... Macha also leads the team with 11 multi-hit games...
Mike Settle, who had an 11-game hitting streak earlier this season, has also
hit safely in 20-of-23 games... catcher Jason Price had a 10-game streak
earlier this year... TCU has 18 triples this season, including four by Rudy
Rivera... the 1998 Frogs hit a school record 33... Erick Macha’s two triples
this season has raised his career total to a school-record 15...he surpassed
Brad Wallace, who hit 14... Walter Olmstead ranks among the league leaders
in batting average (.390), runs (20), hits (32), RBIs (27), doubles (19),
triples (2), home runs (4), total bases (79)... Olmstead has 10 multi-hit
games... he has hit safely in 16 of 21 games... he drove in a career-high
six runs in game one of the Prairie View doubleheader, and he had five RBIs
in game two of the UTPA doubleheader... Tom Bates has already walked 16
times this season, which surpasses his career total of nine from the last
three seasons... last year, he walked three times in 157 plate
appearances... entering this weekend’s action, the Frogs lead the WAC in
batting average (.326), runs scored (196), triples (18), bases on balls
(115)...
HOME RUN DERBY
The Frogs have hit a team total of 25 home runs this season... TCU hit a
school-record nine home runs in the 29-4 win over Iowa State, breaking the
previous record of eight (UNLV-97, BYU-98)... Rudy Rivera hit two, and
Justin Crowder and Trey Crawford hit grand slams... TCU has hit at least one
home run in 13 of the 23 contests... the Frogs have a record of 10-3 in
which they hit a home run... before the record-setting day against Iowa
State, the Frogs had not hit more than two home runs in a game all season...
Walter Olmstead and Mike Settle are tied for the team lead with four each...
Erick Macha has hit three, all coming in a three-game span (Texas, Southwest
Texas and Nevada)... Rivera is tied with Macha for third on the team with
three... Walter Olmstead hit a grand slam against UTPA.
LAST TIME VS. HILO
The Frogs jumped out to a 3-0 start in WAC action, sweeping a three-game set
from visiting Hawaii-Hilo (14-2, 6-1, 12-0)... starting pitchers Chris
Bradshaw, Justin Crowder and Chad Durham combined to pitch 25 innings,
allowing only three runs on 13 hits and four walks, while striking out 17...
the bullpen made only one appearance in the entire series... the TCU defense
committed only two errors in the entire series... offensively, a number of
Frogs had solid weekends... Rudy Rivera had at least two hits in all three
games, hitting .500 (6-12) in the series... Rivera, the leadoff hitter,
drove in five runs in the series... Walter Olmstead hit .417 (5-12) with
five RBIs... Erick Macha scored five runs, while Mike Settle drove in three
runs overall... Jason Price hit .625 (5-8) with a triple, two doubles, three
walks and two steals... as a team, the Frog recorded nine steals in 11
attempts.
ON THE MOUND
Senior pitcher Chris Bradshaw (4-1) needs only one more win to tie his career
high for wins in a single season... Bradshaw won five games in the 2000
season... with 35 starts in his career, he needs to start only 6 more games
to move into fifth in career starts... his 170 strikeouts is only 44 K’s
behind Tim Mauser’s fifth-place total of 214... Bradshaw ranks among the WAC
leaders in wins (4), earned run average (2.95), strikeouts (42) and inning
pitched (42.2)... Bradshaw has struck out 17 hitters in the last 11.2
innings... Justin Crowder struck out a career-best nine in TCU’s 5-3 loss to
Nevada... the TCU bullpen has fared well lately, especially right handers
Stan Newton, Patrick Newburn and Clayton Jerome... Newton has allowed only
two runs, one earned in the last 8.1 innings – a span of six appearances...
Newburn has allowed one earned run in his last 4.1 innings... in Jerome’s
last four outings, he has allowed one run in 7.1 innings... since allowing
five earned runs in four innings against Baylor, David Tombrella has allowed
only seven earned runs in 23.1 innings... Josh Gardner has not allowed a
run in 3.1 innings.
DIAMOND NOTES
TCU has won 14 of the first 23 games played... last season, the Frogs did not
win 14 games until April 9th – the 39th game of the year... this season, the
Frogs are 4-1 in Tuesday games... last season, TCU finished 2-6 in Tuesday
games... TCU’s 6-1 win over Oklahoma ended a nine-game losing streak to the
Sooners... the last win over OU came at Norman in the 1996 season... the
Frogs have already posted two wins over the Texas Longhorns, including a win
at Disch-Falk Field in Austin... the win at Disch-Falk was the second in the
last four years, and only the fifth all-time... senior Marshall Wilson, who
underwent shoulder surgery on Feb. 9 will redshirt this season... Jared
Lundeen will also redshirt after suffering a shoulder injury in the first
week of the year... freshman Juan Estrada made his collegiate debut in TCU’s
5-3 loss at UTA... Estrada, a native of Guatemala, joined the program in
January... in 17 games played on the Hawaiian Islands, the Frogs have a
win-loss mark of 7-10... TCU’s annual Battle at the Ballpark in Arlington
against the Texas Longhorns is scheduled for April 17... tickets are $5 for
the game... TCU has a .966 fielding percentage in the first 23 games, and a
.968 fielding pct. in seven WAC games... the Frogs are 11-3 when they commit
less than two errors, including a 7-1 mark when they are perfect in the
