The TCU Horned Frogs wrap up its 2000-01 home slate and play their final Western Athletic Conference home contest when they host the UTEP Miners in a 7:05 p.m. contest at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum on Thursday, March 1. The contest will mark the final home game for seniors Ryan Carroll, Derrick Davenport, Thomas McTyer and Larry Allaway.
The Horned Frogs are coming off a two-game roadtrip, one that saw them drop a 102-87 decision in Hawaii, then fall in overtime at San Jose State by a 91-90 score despite a 29-point, 10-rebound performance from Bingo Merriex. The two losses dropped the Frogs into a fifth place tie in the WAC standings with Hawaii at 7-7 with just two regular season games remaining.
The Frogs are happy to return to Fort Worth where theyve had a lions share of success this season. The Frogs are 14-1 in 15 games in Fort Worth. They have produced just two better home marks since moving into the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum for the 1961-62 season, going 14-0 in 1985-86 and 16-1 in the 1997-98 campaign.
The Frogs continue to play their brand of Billy Ball, a style that uses an aggressive, pressing defense and an attacking offense. The Frogs are the nations highest scoring team at 94.3 points per game and have been over the 100-point plateau 12 times this season, including a season-high 141 in a win over Central Oklahoma. Since Coach Tubbs took over the TCU program in 1994, the Frogs are 56-1 when they score 100 or more points. Now in his 27th season as a head coach, Tubbs has compiled an overall record of 577-281, including a 138-79 mark since coming to Fort Worth.
The Frogs final regular season tilt will be a 1:00 p.m. tip at SMU on Saturday, March 3. All nine WAC schools will then travel to Tulsa for the conference tournament, set for March 6-10. The eighth and ninth place teams will play Tuesday, then the quarterfinals are set for Thursday, March 8.
